New BBC drama The Gold tells the story of an audacious heist in the Eighties.
The money in these was then ploughed back into UK building developments including London’s Docklands, and, as per [The Independent:](https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/police-traced-laundered-money-around-the-world-detectives-described-it-as-a-typical-old-kent-road-armed-robbery-except-that-this-gang-had-pounds-26m-worth-of-gold-to-dispose-of-david-connett-reports-1540983.html) “A portion was used to buy a former section of Cheltenham Ladies' College, which was then converted into flats for sale.” [The Independent ](https://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/whatever-happened-to-brinksmat-1353688.html)reports that “half of it was smelted and sold back to legitimate dealers, including Johnson Matthey, to whom it belonged”, while another half was simply buried and remains undiscovered. However, in 1986, Noye was found guilty of conspiracy to handle the Brink's-Mat gold, fined £500,000, plus £200,000 costs, and sentenced to 14 years in prison. It's said that Noye melted down the bullions and mixed them with copper coins to dilute the purity of the gold, but also to make it less traceable, as the police were desperately trying to locate the gold, and the people making a fortune from it. In 1992, four people who helped launder the gold – an estimated £14 million – were jailed for five to ten years, including Gordon Parry, Brian Perry, Patrick Clark and Jean Savage. Brian Reader, Michael Relton and Kathleen MacAvoy also were convicted of laundering proceeds or handling stolen goods. Antony Black eventually cracked and told police of his involvement, and of his brother-in-law, Brian Robinson. The men tied up two other security guards, and threatened to douse them in petrol unless they used their codes to open up the vault. One of these was Kenneth Noye (Lowden) who was brought in by MacAvoy’s associates, Brian Perry and George Francis, to help with his stash. At 6.40am on 26 November, 1983, six men, including Micky MacAvoy and Brian Robinson, broke into the Brink’s-Mat warehouse, specifically Unit 7 of the Heathrow International Trading Estate. It’s so far reaching, they had to whittle it down to this so there’ll inevitably be things that have been left out and Neil has also got to make it entertaining”. The burglars had no idea what to do with the gold, so they called in some criminal acquaintances to help turn it into cash.
This retelling of the Brink's-Mat robbery and its aftermath is stylish, well-told and superbly acted – but papers over the darker truths.
Noye’s trial for stabbing an undercover police officer to death is covered here (he was acquitted after claiming he acted in self defence) and it is noted that he knifed his victim in the back five times; crucially, though, the stabbing is not shown on screen, and we barely know the officer involved, which lessens its impact. We see Palmer beginning to build a timeshare business, but are not told that he went on to be jailed for the biggest timeshare fraud in history, and was eventually shot dead. Yet here, while never exactly likeable, there is a suggestion that the audience should be rooting for him as he assembles a team to turn the gold into cash and get one over on the Establishment. The criminal at the heart of this enterprise is Kenneth Noye (Lowden), who fenced the gold and is a working-class boy made – well, not good, but rich. The first episode in particular sets off with a narrative confidence – although it begins to drag around episode four – and the acting across the board is high quality. The 1983 robbery itself, in which six men broke into a depot near Heathrow expecting to steal £1 million in foreign currency but instead finding £26 million in gold bullion, is dealt with in the first five minutes.

The 1983 Brink's-Mat robbery was the largest score in British history – and now it's been turned into a hugely entertaining BBC series.
The Gold is also partially redeemed by a finale that manages to cleverly wrap up loose narrative ends, while acknowledging that the full story is yet to be told – and likely never can be. The real story of Brink’s-Mat and its 30-year aftermath is so bloody and bullet-ridden it purportedly has its own curse, with at least six associated deaths to date. Bonneville’s DCI Boyce is a particular offender in this regard, contributing to the false impression that he’s a holdover from the Dixon of Dock Green era of twee TV coppers, and not a real person at all. (In fact, the real Boyce had a distinguished career of standing up to police corruption in and around south London, including [Great Train Robbery](https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/gallery/2014/sep/28/the-great-train-robbery-in-pictures), the Hatton Garden heist) and storied quests (usually to the Costa del Crime and back again). At the time, it was the largest score in British history.

[Gold](https://www.dailyfx.com/gold-price)’s recent retreat appears to be consolidation within the broader uptrend. In sum, the broader bullish view for gold remains intact, Core CPI likely rose 5.5% on-year and the headline inflation rose 6.2% on-year last month. However, gold would need to break above the support-turned-resistance at 1895-1900 for the immediate downward risks to ease. The story of the 1983 Brink's-Mat robbery is brought to life in this BBC One drama starring Hugh Bonneville, Dominic Cooper and Jack Lowden.
Ham-fisted metaphors aside, The Gold is a lively, creative piece of work from writer-creator Neil Forsyth, which bubbles away with the vigour of a red-hot crucible. And The Gold is more concerned with social dynamics – the difficulty, almost an impossibility, of improving your station – than it is with the crime. This isn’t the story of a heist, but of what happened next. The gold casts a fleeting glow on the faces of each of these people but leaves a deeper mark after it’s gone. And this is where the story of The Gold, BBC One’s new six-part retelling of the Brink’s-Mat robbery, begins. How do you tell the story of a heist, when the heist isn’t the story?

This scenario may benefit gold prices later in 2023, especially if the Fed pauses its rate hikes due to mounting economic pressure. The trend signals a potential recession in the world’s largest economy this year. While inflation is expected to have fallen further in January from the prior month, it is still trending at relatively high levels. The Federal Reserve recently signaled that it plans to keep raising interest rates even as inflation softened in recent months. A new year rally in gold prices cooled over the past two weeks as markets reassessed their outlook for U.S. economy from key inflation data due this week, while copper prices nursed steep losses amid growing uncertainty over an economic recovery in China.

The BBC's new Sunday night drama follows the thieves who stole £26 million worth of gold bullion in the 80s — and the police officers on their trail.
But the script is self-aware enough, if occasionally a bit heavy on the sign-posting, particularly when it came to commentary on class and gender. He was so desperate to free himself from his in-laws’ purse strings that he was easily enticed into an investment opportunity by a known fraudster, who looped him in with Noye and the Brink’s-Mat money. Together, they spotted that Brink’s-Mat presented a rare opportunity to catch the kind of people who usually get away with their crimes. With flashy taste in cars, houses and clothes, Noye embodied a new money sensibility and operated on his own moral code: if you’re not born into money, you’re entitled to take it by any means. He has married into money rather than grown up with it and carefully curated a persona that disguises his lowly roots. In well over their heads, they brought more and more people into an operation that ultimately involved international money laundering and funded the London Docklands property boom.

The £26 million Brinks Mat robbery fuelled a property boom and a global money laundering system—a story told well in BBC drama The Gold.
Years later when Palmer died in a different garden in 2015 the police said it was of natural causes. Some of the first files in the Panama Papers came from laundering the Brinks-Mat gold. Dealing with the cash boosted the creation of Noye and others feel a sense of injustice that the rich stay rich while the rest struggle. About a dozen killings were connected to the criminals who battled for control of it. Over two-thirds of the loot has never been recovered.

From a technical perspective, a sustained break and acceptance below the 50-day SMA, currently around the $1,856 region, will be seen as a fresh trigger for bearish traders. The data could influence the Fed's rate-hike path and determine the near-term trajectory for the XAU/USD. Apart from this, the risk of higher inflation print for January lends support to the Gold price, which is considered a hedge against rising inflation. This, in turn, assists the USD to stand tall near a one-month high, which is seen as another factor that contributes to capping the upside for the US Dollar-denominated Gold price. Moreover, the Labor Department's annual revisions of the Consumer Price Index (CPI) showed on Friday that consumer prices rose in December instead of falling as previously estimated. The XAU/USD manages to hold above the 50-day Simple Moving Average (SMA) support, though remains well within the striking distance of over a one-month low touched on Friday.
