Win or lose at the Baftas, Goonies star Ke Huy Quan takes award for ... (The Guardian)

The former child star's success in Everything, Everywhere, All At Once puts him back on the red carpet after years on the sidelines.

He has even developed a signature accessory: a googly eye lapel badge – a nod to his Everything, Everywhere’s character’s love for stickers with the same design. Rebecca Sun, senior editor for diversity and inclusion at the Hollywood Reporter, said: “Comeback stories don’t get much more perfect than Quan potentially becoming an Oscar winner with his first major role in 40 years. There he records the events, dinners and ceremonies he once dreamed of attending. Aged 10, he tagged along with his brother to an open audition for a film and ended up winning the role that turned him into one of the most recognisable child stars of the 1980s. [Crazy Rich Asians](https://www.theguardian.com/film/2018/aug/13/crazy-rich-asians-review-kevin-kwan) made Quan want to give it one last shot, and his first audition led to Everything, Everywhere. He played Chinese orphan Short Round in 1984’s Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom – Harrison Ford taught him to swim during the shoot in Sri Lanka.

The Daniels (Kwan and Scheinert) win top DGA award for ... (USA TODAY)

The Directors Guild of America gave its top prize to Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert for "Everything Everywhere All at Once," leading up the Oscars.

The other nominees were Todd Field ("Tár"), Martin McDonagh ("The Banshees of Inisherin") and Joseph Kosinski ("Top Gun: Maverick"). [Steven Spielberg](https://www.usatoday.com/story/entertainment/movies/2021/06/09/steven-spielberg-movies-ranked/7584478002/) a record-extending four wins for the guild's top honor. They're also uncommonly young (both are 35) and early in their careers (this is just their second feature film) to win with the guild – especially over a veteran like Spielberg, who holds the record for most DGA nominations (13). But both of the guild's other top awards went to female filmmakers. In 75 years, only 10 times have the DGA winner and the Oscar winner not aligned. In the past 10 years, all but once has the DGA winner gone on to win at the Academy Awards.

How Son Lux wrote the perfect score for the year's most bonkers ... (NPR)

Son Lux frontman Ryan Lott reveals how the band was able to keep pace with the frenetic, shape-shifting storytelling of Everything Everywhere All At Once, ...

And my guess is what he heard in our music is a type of density of information that was akin to the sort of density of storytelling and texture that they were going to be going for in this movie. What a cool thing that the Daniels have reached out to us about this project that they have in mind. And then I had some "a-ha" moments and I started to understand why they called us. But they knew they didn't want a "Hollywood" composer and they knew they didn't want to make a movie like any other movie. And I was like, "Are they sure they called the right dudes?" There's this sort of beating heart of it all — a kind of heart-on-your-sleeve, unrestrained emotional quality that is a trademark of much of the Son Lux discography. But we had a great connection right away and they said, "OK, so before we get ahead of ourselves, we'll send you the script and you see what you think." Now, about a year after the film came out, that score by Son Lux, along with a song they wrote for the end credits called "This Is A Life" are both up for Oscars. But her character evolves, obviously, and we see her from multiple perspectives as we do every character in this film. It's a movie about the biggest (and smallest) things in life and the vastness of the universe. So they turned to the band That was the trick: How do we smash tropes and yet give in to tropes?
