Angela Bassett did the thing. If you watch the video of the rap – and I pray you do – you’ll see that she is dancing approvingly. ‘Angela Bassett did the thing.’ The thing. A slightly iffy line, since Michelle Yeoh has been acting since 1984, which was seven years before Ariana DeBose was born, which means there is no physical way that DeBose could have possibly loved her since the start of her career. Honestly, here everyone was still too busy processing “Angela Bassett did the thing” to fully appreciate the next line. What you are looking at is the physical manifestation of the thought ‘I flew all the way here for this?’ She is enchanted by the chaos. In years to come, oral histories will be written about Angela Bassett Did the Thing. This is because, if this screengrab is any reaction, Ana de Armes has transformed into a bored Roman emperor, just waiting for an opportunity to set the lions on Ariana DeBose. Or, as DeBose calls it, “the one”. The first part was a full-bore rendition of Sisters are Doin’ It For Themselves; in itself an orgy of spinning and twirling and flung chairs, performed by DuBose in the manner of someone desperately trying to spook a horse. Technically it was a musical performance by Ariana DeBose, but it was a performance so gormless, so busy, so deeply and unsettlingly confusing, that to give it a name would only serve to minimise it.
We're not the only ones who can't get "Angela Bassett did the thing, Viola Davis my Woman King" out of their heads, right?

BAFTAs producer Nick Bullen breaks down the show's biggest moments, including DeBose's opener and the supporting actress winner snafu.
It was a warm night, and if you set out to have a warm night, hopefully that translates to the audience and people don’t get on stage and slap each other. And I can tell you now, there was a moment in the night where the AVID in the truck that was packaging the other awards crashed. It’s a case of having a slightly more natural ebb and flow to the show. How much of that was the smaller venue, and how much was intentional? And then the fact that the Prince and Princess of Wales were in the room of course gave an added poignancy. Was that done primarily because Prince William and Kate were in the audience after a number of years away? That rap section in the middle, mentioning the women in the room, was because it’s been a great year for women in film, and we wanted to celebrate that. So I think it’s one of those things that people have understood that it was all done with the best intentions, but unfortunately, there was a slip up. The songs she was singing are very familiar songs, the room was clapping, and people were sort of dancing to the music. I spent most of my night backstage, and all the feedback I was getting from the citation readers, winners coming through, and the stars going into Alison Hammond’s studio, was that the show felt warm, charming, and that there was joy in the room. “I think a lot of people don’t like change, and there’s a view that the BAFTAs have to be this slightly stiff, traditional British, middle-England messaging. While the lyrics felt clumsy to those watching at home, and a clip of the lyrics played nonstop on Twitter last night, the mood inside the room was more celebratory.
Ariana DeBose "did the thing" at the BAFTAs — and honestly, people need to calm down about it, a producer for the awards show says.

The answers to these questions don’t matter.
Ariana DeBose faced a slew of online criticism following her performance at the BAFTA Awards, during which she rapped about the night's female nominees.
