Gareth Ainsworth has been confirmed as Queens Park Rangers' manager after accepting the chance to take charge at his former club.

[Championship](https://www.theguardian.com/football/championship) in 2020. “I still have a lot of life to live and I want to be the best coach – and maybe manager – that I can be.” Wycombe have an agreement in principle for their former captain Matt Bloomfield to replace Ainsworth. Ainsworth and the former Blackpool manager Michael Appleton were on QPR’s three-man shortlist when Beale got the job last summer. “It’s the club where I was most known for playing and you get moments in your career that resonate with you forever. Ainsworth extended his Wycombe contract in June but the lure of managing QPR, where he made 141 league appearances across a seven-year spell, was too big to turn down.

Ambition is not always about millions of pounds and silverware and the best of this and the best of that. QPR is a big job but it's a club close to his heart and for now he is happy to keep challenging himself every day. 'Just be you and you is good enough. People don't like things that are different and he is different because he did not play at a high level so he has had to earn his respect. I am ambitious to be happy, to be content, to be myself. You don't prosper in the cut-throat world of the English lower leagues just because people take a shine to you because you have never renounced your love for Guns N' Roses and Motley Crue. But if you see a weakness or you want to be able to exploit something, then you do it. 'The way I look, the way I dress, it doesn't make any difference to my performance. They can say what they want but the lesson is that it is really important to be yourself.' In our thirst for difference; for character, there is a danger we overlook the quality of his work. He is not wearing the lucky red snakeskin boots he rocked for the League One play-off final at Wembley in 2020 when his Wycombe Wanderers team were promoted to the Championship, either. It is a long way from rock and roll out here.

Ainsworth has managed Wycombe since 2012 and has them in the hunt for the League One play-offs again. [ finalising a move](https://twitter.com/skysports_sheth/status/1627969578922909696?s=20) for their former midfielder - who spent seven years at the club. With compensation said to be agreed between the Chairboys and QPR though, it looks as though his long-stint at Adams Park may be coming to an end. It leaves the west London club on the hunt for a new boss and Wycombe Wanderers chief Ainsworth is the runaway favourite. Rovers of course moved for Jon Dahl Tomasson in the end, while the Blackburn-born manager stayed at Adams Park. QPR have slipped down to 17th in the table, having been top of the Championship on October 22nd.

EFL pundit Ali Maxwell has offered his thoughts as QPR close in on the appointment of Gareth Ainsworth.

“The other thing is out of possession, they’ve been unbelievably good. So I’m looking forward to seeing how it looks.” “I agree with you that Wycombe’s style of play looks different to three years ago or two years ago in the Championship. Not really shown that much quality on that front, as well. “Lyndon Dykes in particular who is currently recovering from quite a serious illness and therefore I don’t think is around. They go back to front quickly.

Gareth Ainsworth to QPR: The right step at the right time as the ... (Football365.com)

After ten-plus years of pushing the boundaries at Wycombe Wanderers, Gareth Ainsworth is stepping up to return to Championship side QPR.

QPR just need results for the time being before Ainsworth can have a summer to settle in before next season. That feels a long way off right now, but Ainsworth at least now has enough strings on his managerial bow to ensure that he can get them out of their current mire. Ainsworth has a reputation for preferring a negative approach as a manager, with long-ball tactics and time-wasting riling up opponents in the Championship especially. This worked a treat over the past few seasons as Ainsworth brought the club immense levels of success. The Hoops have some quality Championship operators in their squad. But they did not get relegated with a whimper as they fought right up to the final day before finishing 22nd.
