REPORT: Stanley 0 Bolton Wanderers 2 (Accrington Stanley)

Accrington Stanley's Wembley dream is over as two late goals sent Bolton Wanderers to the national stadium in the Papa Johns Trophy final.

Kachunga had a strike blocked as Bolton piled on the pressure and, in a real goalmouth scramble, Charles hit the post, the ball came out to Declan John whose strike was kept out by Jensen and then, on the follow-up, Charles hit the underside of the crossbar and the ball bounced to safety. Charles had the ball in the net for Wanderers a minute later but it was ruled out for off-side and, soon after, a Charles goalbound shot hit his own player while Kieran Lee fired wide in the follow-up. The Reds were always up against it after Sean McConville was sent off in the 22nd minute for what was judged a high tackle and then Liam Coyle was stretchered off with a serious head injury just after half-time.

The Wembley wait goes on for Accrington Stanley after falling at the final hurdle against Bolton Wanderers at the Wham Stadium.

Stanley were battling to take the game into penalties, but Bolton finally found a way through with 81 minutes on the watch. Ex-Stanley striker Dion Charles broke the offside trap in the 15th minute to run onto a Ricardo Santos pass, but Lukas Jensen stood tall and diverted the effort wide with an outstretched leg. Stanley had to play more than two thirds of the game with 10 men after Sean McConville was shown a straight red card for a foul on Conor Bradley.

But, my, if he could have chosen a time to score a goal, or gain a spot of redemption. This would really be a rest of his focus and concentration. Within a few minutes of the restart, things really caught fire. He was played in by a fine slide-rule pass from captain Ricardo Santos but Lukas Jensen was quick off his line to divert it past the post. That should have been a green light for Wanderers to push on. From the owners, Football Ventures, who took a car-crash of a club out of administration, survived a pandemic, then lovingly rebuilt things from ground level once again, to the fans, many of whom had seen their team dismantled 7-1 on this very ground just over three years ago, relegated,
