Verstappen set the pace with a 1:32.959, a time that was three-tenths quicker than Sainz and significantly faster than the laps this time last year as these F1 cars enter the second season of a much-changed generation.

F1 Academy: Is Formula 1 finally taking women seriously? (BBC News)

Two teenage female drivers say they hope the new F1 Academy will break down barriers in the sport.

"I don't want to be seen as a female driver, I just want to be seen as a driver. I've got to get physically fitter and things like that. But are they finally taking women seriously with the introduction of the new F1 Academy? A female driver hasn't competed in a Formula 1 grand prix since 1976. "As soon as I heard about the series, the backing of Formula 1 and the teams and people involved, I was extremely keen to be part of this first historic season," she tells Newsbeat. "And if it's not me, I want it to be the next generation.

There are a lot of races on the calendar where you need different things from the car, so step-by-step.” “It was good," Verstappen said when he stepped out of the cockpit after the chequered flag brought the first day of testing to a close. "But the car is running well, and I think that’s the most important. "It's a bit of an evolution from last year. Compared to last year, there are few regulation changes coming into effect this season meaning that the upgrades on the 2023 cars are fairly minimal. The Alpine F1 Team continued its preparations for the 2023 FIA Formula 1 World Championship as pre-season testing began on Thursday at the Bahrain International ...

These were preventative measures, but we thought they were useful to make so we could run safely and reliably for the remainder of the day. There are plenty of positives to take away and we can focus on maximising the potential of the car in the coming days. George Russell: It was great to be back out in the car and get a first real experience of the W14. Hopefully the car continues to run like clockwork, and we can make the most of the remaining track time. Oscar Piastri: “My first morning of testing went pretty smoothly which is a good start to the season. The car was responding well to the changes we made and we will continue to review the data this evening ahead of Fernando’s time in the car tomorrow. “We will have to recover the time we lost over the next two days to ensure we maximise our learnings ahead of the race next week. We had a lot of good running throughout the day when it was hot and sunny and also in the evening which is more representative. We were able to achieve the targets that we had set out and I’m happy with how I felt in the car. The goal for the morning session was focused on reliability through a series of baseline runs with Hulkenberg finishing at the break with 51 laps to his credit. Of course, this is only the opening day of testing, and there is plenty of work ahead for everyone, but it’s been a positive start. The Swiss-based team had a successful first day of official track action, as Zhou Guanyu and Valtteri Bottas put the new C43 to the test at the Bahrain International Circuit.

But for now we are very much focused at the moment on the Madrid launch and using it as an opportunity to see how it performs." "We felt excited by, rather than launching in London, New York, Los Angeles – an obvious choice – launching the show in a market like Madrid. "We will use that first show to refine it before it goes to the next city," Harvey explains. Part of what makes F1 such a fascinating subject matter is the fact it does have this richness to it – it's a story of triumph as well as tragedy. And that really is reflected so accurately in the sport's history." "The ambition now, for all of the teams and everyone involved in F1, is 'how can we make this one of the 21st century's great stories? F1's top brass and the teams themselves have played a significant role in the production of this new show. Ticket sales, Harvey declares with an obvious note of pride, "have been very, very positive" with the first weekend completely sold out. "So we're able to look back at what people like Bernie and Ron Dennis, Enzo Ferrari and Colin Chapman – the pioneers – created for the sport, but we're also now able to look forward to what the future holds for F1. This new much larger, more diverse audience is a large part of the reason why now is the right time for F1 to go bigger and bolder than it has ever done before in terms of its storytelling. It promises a wealth of artefacts, interactive displays and historical references designed to cater to motorsport fans old and new – ideal, considering the global growth in popularity F1 has enjoyed in recent years. We’ll be getting underway in 30 minutes’ time for the first four-hour session of the day until 1415 local time. 1030: Alonso is winding up the AMR23 for a push run on the C2 tyre, that first attempt taking him P2, a couple of seconds shy of Magnussen. F1 tyre blanket ban set for crunch vote after British Grand Prix (autosport.com)

Formula 1's plans to ban tyre blankets from 2024 will face a final vote involving teams, the FIA and FOM after this year's British Grand Prix in July.

[PlusPlusFormula 1Bahrain February Testing ](/f1/news/does-f1-testing-need-an-injection-of-fresh-excitement/10436377/) "But it's not the same because F1 is a different championship. It is difficult." But it's a very big challenge. Pirelli's head of F1 and car racing Mario Isola told Autosport: "Silverstone is one of the races where we have two days of testing after the race. "I believe that it's a target of everyone to go in this direction for sustainability, but clearly nobody wants to damage the show.

How Mercedes managed to make its 2023 F1 front wing legal - The ... (The Race)

Mercedes' distinctive 2022 endplate was made illegal in the 2023 Formula 1 rules, but the team has found a way to replicate its effect.

Instead, the additions to Article 3.9.3 dictated the orientation and location of the intersections between the front wing profiles and the endplate in detail. Essentially Mercedes has responded to the rules putting new limits on where it could position certain elements of its wing design by finding a different space to place those elements so they still achieve the desired effect. Those on the second and third front wing elements (in red) are straightforward connections. What Mercedes opted to do is move the end of the front wing profiles slightly inboard then connect them to the endplate with narrow stays, which fulfils the requirement for continuity. The F1 show car shows a simple interpretation of these regulations, creating a gentle upward curve as the front wing profiles blend into the vertical endplate. This was removed for the first issue of the 2023 regulations to allow for greater precision.

F1 testing session ends with bizarre close call between Lando ... (Mirror.co.uk)

But on a more serious note shortly after, as the session was red flagged for real, both noted that it was actually a fairly hairy situation. The first race start was aborted on purpose so the drivers could practice what to do in that situation and they all duly embarked upon another formation lap, as is procedure. But few of them took it seriously – almost causing a collision on the start-finish straight. He said: "Lights out and away we go, and a fantastic start... But everybody else remained stationary in their grid boxes, forcing Sainz and Hamilton to stop earlier than planned. But it ended with a very strange moment as a red flag test almost went horribly wrong.

F1 LIVE: Hamilton warned of 'vicious cycle' as testing underway (Daily Express)

Sergio Perez will start off Red Bull's running before Max Verstappen concludes his pre-season testing later today after enjoying eight hours on Wednesday.

He said: "When you look at the reliability and so on, you could almost say, with the amount of races that promoters are looking to cram in now, why not go to two days of testing and then go racing?" McLaren star Lando Norris was almost at the centre of a crash with Ferrari's Carlos Sainz during F1 pre-season testing in Bahrain on Friday. It seems as though Mercedes chiefs were unhappy with how things went as they held an 'unplanned' meeting with both of their drivers in the paddock after the session. And when Sky asked Russell if everything was alright, the driver replied: “I'd rather be in the car.” “Whether we're going to have that next weekend in Bahrain, I think may be a bit of a stretch. The Mercedes star was around seven-tenths slower than the Dutchman on day one in Bahrain as cars returned to action after the winter break. Thanks for following and be sure to join us again tomorrow for more of the same. The car is looking really strong and obviously Max [Verstappen] is performing really well. But the ace only made it to Turn 10 before his car stopped. However, teams are mainly focussing on reliability with performance gains set to come later in the three-day test. He failed to move from the starting grid after the lights had turned to green as drivers practiced their starts. George Russell admits he’s not expecting Mercedes to compete for victory at next weekend’s season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix.
