The disgraced singer is sentenced to 20 years, but 19 will be served alongside an existing term.
Kelly's defence attorney, Jennifer Bonjean, had asked the judge to allow Kelly to serve his latest sentence concurrently with the previous sentence, meaning he would have served them at the same time. "Because Kelly is Kelly, more people have watched child pornography," they said in a memo. They said Kelly's crimes were made worse by the fact that he filmed them, with some of the footage later becoming available online.
Judge ruled singer will serve this at same time as current 30-year sentence.
However, the singer’s lawyer, Jennifer Bonjean, said that the 56-year-old was “likely to die in prison either way”. As a result of the new sentencing, he will serve an extra year in prison. R Kelly was acquitted of two further counts of enticing minors into having sex and one related to an obstruction of an earlier investigation into the abuse of the goddaughter he has been found guilty of abusing.
The disgraced singer's sentence by an Illinois court for child pornography charges brings his total prison term to 31 years.
