Imperial remembers victims of the Ukraine invasion on first anniversary (Imperial College London)

STANDING IN SOLIDARITY - Staff and students at Imperial College Business School gathered to mark the first anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

The purpose of the project was to help community leaders in Saint-Omer in France in their efforts to resettle Ukrainians currently displaced by the war. Reflecting on the event, Professor Francisco Veloso, Dean of Imperial College Business School said: “It was an important moment for our community to come together to remember those affected by the horrors of this war, a year on from the start of the crisis. Last year students and staff from the Business School worked with Solidarité Ukraine The aim of the event was to spark discussion among participants and contributors from London universities and think tanks. The discussion looked at both the reality of war and the potential for rebuilding Ukraine on solid post-war foundations. Her suggestion – to hug a Ukrainian when you meet one, deeply resonated with me.”

As, the President said in Kyiv this week, “One year later, Kyiv stands and Ukraine stands.” Ukraine’s fight and its people’s resolve and resilience have emerged as an inspiration to the world, showing they will not be cowed. This war is an attempt to seize territory from Ukraine and thwart its independent, democratic trajectory. It was then that Russia’s forces illegally crossed into Ukraine’s sovereign territory to wage a war that has needlessly killed tens of thousands of people and harmed millions more.

We are equally inspired by our own domestic democratic legacy of the likes of Havel, Pankhurst and Horákova. As we remember the terrible events of 24 February, and the subsequent 12 months, it is worth reflecting on and remembering why both of our countries continue to stand with Ukraine. And the risk of further aggression only increases. The generosity and empathy of the Czech people has been clear to me since my first day here. Putin’s Russia completely miscalculated the resolve and resilience of the Ukrainian people, expecting a swift and dramatic victory. Any visitor to the UK Embassy in Prague will have walked past the statue of Winston Churchill.

Win, lose, stalemate or a shock: how might the Ukraine war end? (The Guardian)

Five scenarios for the end of the war, from a Russian or Ukrainian breakthrough to a frozen conflict.

Ukraine appears very dependent on Volodymyr Zelenskiy in terms of its public diplomacy, but he does not direct its military strategy in detail and the country’s desire to fight runs very deep. The result is a protracted struggle that gradually lessens in intensity as the Russians run short on ammunition and resupply to Ukraine eases. Russia hopes it can embroil the west in a long proxy war that will exhaust countries first militarily and then politically. “You end up with something between a frozen conflict and an everlasting war, in which neither side has the energy or economy to win,” Nixey said. Combine that with another attack on the now repaired 12-mile (19km) Kerch Bridge to the Russian mainland and Crimea would be increasingly isolated and vulnerable. At this point, Russia could call for a ceasefire to retain what it has, and run a defensive campaign to consolidate its battered military.

'Victory inevitable': Zelenskiy addresses defiant Ukraine on war's first ... (The Guardian)

President says start of Russian invasion was 'longest day of our lives' and urges allies to 'respect promises'

He said Ukraine needed to deepen its cooperation with countries in Africa and Latin America to counter Russia’s influence. Economic and diplomatic repercussions have rippled around the globe. It is to defend their land and their people.” “He was my brother,” said a junior sergeant who identified himself only by his call sign “Transit”. But China, India and countries in the global south have proven ambivalent about arguments that Ukraine is the frontline of a fight for freedom and democracy. On this day, our children and grandchildren will remember how strong Ukrainians are, mentally, physically, and spiritually.” A year on, casualty figures are high on both sides, with western estimates suggesting hundreds of thousands have been killed or wounded. In Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second largest city, Oleksandr Hranyk echoed the conflicted feelings of many. At a service at St Vladimir’s church in Kyiv, the former patriarch Filaret described the “challenges and suffering” his country was facing. The hardest day of our modern history. The longest day of our lives. Morawiecki said Poland would also be willing to train Ukrainian pilots on F-16 jets.

Looking ahead, there are signs that the effects of the war on euro area inflation via developments in international energy and food markets could moderate. While in 2022 energy inflation was by far the most significant driver of inflation, most recently the largest contribution has come from food inflation (Chart 1). This is particularly the case for low-income households in which food and energy constitute a sizeable share of the consumption.[ Zooming in on the inflation rates of different components more starkly reveals the impact of the war (Chart 1b). Foreign Secretary James Cleverly gave a statement at the UN Security Council open debate on Ukraine.

The UK is proud of the support we have given to Ukraine. We must never allow Ukraine again to be vulnerable to attack. Those of us in this chamber have a special responsibility to the UN Charter. It’s why the UN Charter needs to be enforced. And it is to protect them from the aggression of those countries that do. These things exist to protect countries that do not themselves have big and powerful armies. For these reasons, and many more, Putin cannot – must not – win in Ukraine. It was a clear demonstration that whilst the Ukrainians may have been hit – and hit hard – their spirit will not be broken. Global shortages of food and fuel. Over the past year, Putin has shown that he is willing to wage a war of attrition. Hundreds of thousands more dead and wounded. But I arrived just after another Russian missile attack on civilian infrastructure had knocked out the water and electricity supply to that city.

But he conceded that Ukraine had failed to get its message across to countries in the global south, including India and much of Africa. He recalled how Ukrainians “didn’t run to Russian troops with flowers” when they came across the border a year ago and instead greeted them with weapons. The government’s own figures show a rapid rise in Ukrainian refugees presenting as at risk of homelessness, and local authorities with already-stretched housing lists can offer no solution. Some are feeling the cost of living pinch, others are feeling the strain of having two families living under one roof, and many just feel they’ve done their part and it’s time for the government to step in. Few days went by in the early weeks of our reporting without another message or email from a host desperate for help in getting their case resolved. But it also demonstrated the incredible generosity, kindness and sacrifice, of British hosts willing to go above and beyond to help other human beings in danger. One host relayed the response she received from a tearful caseworker answering calls on the outsourced Ukraine visa helpline: “I don’t want to lie to you, we don’t have access to the system and all they tell us to do is write down your case number and say we’ll escalate it. Without answers, many hosts and refugees turned to journalists for help in getting their stories told.
