News and Press Release in English on Türkiye about Education, Food and Nutrition, Earthquake and more; published on 24 Feb 2023 by UNICEF.

"Children in Türkiye are at risk of developing anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder. We are supporting the Government in identifying unaccompanied and separated children; setting up child-friendly temporary learning spaces; and assessing water, health and nutrition needs. "We have so far reached nearly 270,000 people including over 162,000 children with critical supplies including hygiene kits, winter clothes, and electrical heaters. This is the complexity of the tragedy that we see before us now. Over 1 million people are staying in temporary accommodation shelters – gyms, stadiums, hotels and dormitories - with limited access to essential services. Families are still taking refuge in cars, bus stations, under bridges and in makeshift tents.

Villagers mourn mosque destroyed by Syria's earthquake (Aljazeera.com)

'People's hearts are attached to this mosque,' says the imam of Maland's destroyed mosque.

It means so much to the village people: It was a shelter, a place of prayer, of learning, of gathering, of knowledge. “The mosque was a reassuring presence, as people would find peace of mind within its walls.” “I was in the room nearest the mosque when the earthquake hit, between sleep and wakefulness. Huge rocks fell into the room where I was sleeping,” he said, adding that it was a “miracle” that he survived. He had gathered with the villagers in an open, rubble-strewn space to perform the communal Friday prayers. When they arrived, they were shocked to find the entire mosque destroyed with its dome resting on the ground.

Turkey, hit by earthquake, conceals mass COVID-19 pandemic deaths (WSWS)

Newly released mortality statistics reveal that Turkey's government, implicated in tens of thousands of deaths by its handling of long-predicted earthquakes ...

With a new understanding with the participation of the society, it is necessary to move towards the goal of healthy and sustainable cities with earth-friendly, earthquake-resistant solid buildings. The number of toilets is very low and some of the toilets are haphazardly placed on the ground with no connection to water or cesspools.” It added “There are not enough toilets and some of the toilets that have been opened for use do not meet the appropriate conditions. For this, the working class must bring an end to the policy of “profit before lives” and its source, capitalism, and build a global society based on social needs, i.e., socialism. The report stated that only one of the 12 water wells could be utilized, and mountains of garbage have piled up. It warned about post-earthquake reconstruction: “The danger that awaits us now is to build similar buildings to the old areas with the old understanding and to move towards new disasters … This policy, implemented all over the world, reached its climax last year with the claim that “the pandemic is over.” In fact, infections and deaths from COVID-19 continue in Turkey and around the world. These areas do not effectively protect people from the cold and pose health risks in many respects, such as the possible presence of pesticides. It was a product of the indifference of the entire ruling class towards public health and safety. Osman Bilgin, the governor of Şırnak, who was in charge of a district in the earthquake-hit area, admitted that the real death toll in Turkey alone could be over 150,000. HASUDER has reported that “There is a general shortage of toilets in Hatay. It even blocked access to Twitter, which was used by volunteers in search and rescue efforts to locate those under the rubble. He added, “It doesn’t matter to them how many of us died in which disaster.

Turkish journalists detained over earthquake reports (BBC News)

Press freedom groups criticise a new "disinformation law" used to target reporting on the disaster.

He was detained on suspicion of "inciting hatred" for interviewing a volunteer critical of the government's rescue effort and later released, according to RSF. He said the police questioned him about his reporting from the earthquake epicentre and accused him of spreading false information. Mr Koçer was touched by the influx of volunteers and rescue teams coming from Western Turkey, and he shared their stories on Twitter. The directorate also rolled out a smartphone app called "Disinformation Reporting Service" encouraging people to report manipulative posts about the quake. Mr Koçer left Diyarbakir and drove to the city of Gaziantep. I felt the house shaking, I felt the TV shaking," says Mr Koçer.

Turkey starts work to build homes in two earthquake-hit towns (Chard & Ilminster News)

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who faces elections in either May or June, has promised to reconstruct homes within the year.

“We immediately got to work in areas where we have signed contracts and completed ground survey work.” The work comes less than three weeks after the magnitude 7.8 quake struck, killing more than 47,000 people in Turkey and Syria — the vast majority in Turkey. Murat Kurum, the minister for the environment, urbanisation and climate change, said on Twitter that excavations were taking place in the towns of Nurdagi and Islahiye in Gaziantep province, where the government plans to build an initial 855 homes.
