The Inspector Morse prequel series is back for the last time, starring Shaun Evans as the younger version of John Thaw's Morse.

Because we have managed to have a very good beginning, a very good middle and a very good end. From the first Endeavour pilot screenwriter Russell Lewis has known exactly where he wanted to end the saga of Endeavour Morse and Fred Thursday. So he has taken some time off and been away for a number of months in what is said to be the West Country to get his act together. We put off this awful day for as long as we possibly could, but there was a point a few years ago where we agreed as a creative team that it was time to prepare for the final end and go out on a high. In the opening episode, it's spring 1972 and Endeavour's return to Castle Gate coincides with the homecoming of the Oxford Concert Orchestra, led by composer Sir Alexander Lermontov. The ninth series of Endeavour opens with its first two-hour episode on Sunday, February 26, and will be on from 8pm to 10pm. Endeavour Series 8 Recap: Morse's Downward Spiral, Joan & Jim's ... (Den of Geek)

[Prelude’](https://www.denofgeek.com/tv/endeavour-series-9-episode-1-review-prelude-to-the-ending/), Morse investigates the death of an orchestra leader while Fred uncovers an unsettling connection to a past case when ‘London business’ turns up once again in Oxford… It turned out to be a conspiracy between the surviving relatives and friends of the unstable young man found responsible for the original killings, for which Morse found himself at the centre (the No. [Striker](https://www.denofgeek.com/tv/endeavour-series-8-episode-1-review-the-inspector-morse-transition-begins/)’ – an Oxford college secretary killed by a parcel bomb at work, and a death threat against a Northern Irish star player in the Oxford Wanderers football team. [father-figure](https://www.denofgeek.com/tv/endeavour-why-isnt-fred-thursday-in-morses-later-life/), Fred told Morse to seek help and to “break the habit before it breaks” him. [Scherzo](https://www.denofgeek.com/tv/endeavour-series-8-episode-2-review-morse-haunted-by-ghosts-of-his-past/)’ was partly just that – a light and playful interlude, this one riffing on 1970s sex comedies with a nudist colony setting – combined with a darker story about an estranged father murdering the men involved in an illegal distribution network for blue films in which his daughter had performed. By the next morning, he accepted Fred’s offer and agreed to take leave to deal with his drink problem. The dance went well and Jim proved himself a gentleman when, out of Joan’s earshot, he curtly told off a cabbie who’d described her in sexist terms. While Endeavour was on a downward spiral, his former housemate Strange was on the way up. In Series 8, she was back from Stevenage, living in Oxford with a housemate, and working as a Welfare Officer. In Series 8, that transformation leapt ahead, taking Endeavour to the brink. Fred told Bright that after the Venetian ordeal, Morse “walks a step slower” and had “lost some of his bounce.” One thing’s for sure, said Fred, he was no longer the kid that got off the coach from Carshall-Newtown. As Series 9 arrives, here’s a recap of his struggles, Joan and Strange’s romance, and Fred and Win’s missing soldier son Sam.

Endeavour: the Blenheim Vale Abuse Scandal, Landesman ... (Den of Geek US)

An unresolved Series 2 case is back for Endeavour's final run. Here's a reminder of the 'Neverland' abuse cover-up.

We never really closed the circle at the end of ‘Neverland’ and this is an attempt to do that. The traumatising abuse suffered by the Blenheim Vale children – or as the report would have it “extraneous matters” – was hushed up, one scandal of many, unresolved…until now. We are also of a view that further investigation into other extraneous matters would not be in the national interest, to which end, all investigative materials relating to Blenheim Vale Boys’ Home are to be sealed for 50 Years.” He was later revealed to have been part of a child abuse ring operating in the late 1940s and early 1950s at the now-derelict Blenheim Vale Boys’ Home – the site of which Landesman Construction planned to redevelop as the new police Divisional HQ. Four men had colluded in the historic child abuse at Blenheim Vale: Assistant Chief Constable Clive Deare, town hall Alderman Gerald Wintergreen, Josiah Landesman and Dr Fairbridge, the home’s doctor who was well aware of the abuse and not only helped to cover it up but also allowed the sexual abuse of his young daughter Angela. Landesman was introduced as a wealthy pillar of the community whose company donated £1000 to the Police Widows and Orphans Fund. Endeavour review – the Morse prequel's final series scales heights ... (The Guardian)

An incriminating note written on sheet music, a flirtatious musician, a pint of bitter … this intricate, sure-footed crime show's farewell is even more ...

In this episode, Morse has returned to work after going to Lyme Regis to dry out following the alcoholic debacles of the last series. Whether she is envious of the latter’s talent or imagines Christina is having an affair with Lermontov (Nicholas Farrell) is unclear. This kind of barmy plot device is regularly the fate of classical musicians in TV and cinema. The scene is Oxford, 1972, and Morse is a man out of temper with the times. Everybody, not just the violinists, is highly strung, has a silly name, and expresses themselves with rococo hubris or self-contempt. The tailor of Morse’s elegant suit is a stranger to flares, his barber intolerant of mutton-chop sideburns.

Endeavour Series 9 Episode 1 Review: A Prelude to the Ending (Den of Geek)

Past cases make an ominous return in an enjoyable and unavoidably poignant episode of Endeavour. Spoilers.

[Shaun Evans](https://www.denofgeek.com/tv/endeavour-season-9-shaun-evans-melancholy-sad-satisfying-ending/) (once again the director of some of this drama’s most nuanced performances from its regular cast) conveyed Fred and Morse’s awkward affection to great affect. It will air on PBS Masterpiece in the US at a later date. Like Christ in the desert, Morse was tempted three times in the episode (Dorothea, Dr DeBryn and surprise returnee Ronnie Box all offered him drinks that he refused). But when he finally reached out for Joan, too late, and found her out of grasp, it took the ground out from under him. Sir Alex and Christina epitomised an unhealthy obsession with, and unwillingness to let go of, a protegee. And what do we make of murder victim Andy Lewis, down from the North-East. How well it will end for Fred and the Thursday family in two episodes’ time remains to be seen. Bright is retiring and he wants to see his men to safe harbour before he goes. The last time we were at Blenheim Vale in Series 2’s ‘ Add in the bent Soho police Fred encountered in last series’ ‘Scherzo’ (spot The Ostrich Fanciers’ Club card among Mickey Flood’s possessions?) and the stink of corruption that follows ex-copper Ronnie Box and any mention of Charlie Thursday around, and there’s a promising sense of building dread – helped in no small part by the tense string soundtrack provided by the Oxford Concert Orchestra. Whether it was the killer’s unconvincing wig that signalled her as suspicious from the off, or the unconvincing idea that anybody would rather commit murder than simply get a new job or break a friendship, the resolution felt rather arbitrary. until his offer to escort Miss Thursday to the next wedding in her diary meets the news that Joan’s next wedding will be her own.

For Morse, it meant everyone diplomatically enquiring about his “time away” (read: his spell in rehab to tackle his drinking problem). With a slimy orchestra manager, bitchy backstabbing from the musicians and a dictatorial conductor, there was plenty for our heroes to get their teeth stuck into. This was particularly distressing to Chief Superintendent Bright (Anton Lesser) who was thoroughly displeased to find the nastiness of London gangs infiltrating the otherwise If the much-loved Morse prequel must come to an end, a rousing on-screen score feels appropriate.
