Northern Lights in Cornwall: Where to see them tonight (Cornwall Live)

This is where you might see the Aurora Borealis tonight in the UK.

Some of these then become stuck in the earth's magnetic field and accelerate towards the north and south poles. Although mostly associated with the northern hemisphere, the aurora can be seen at both poles of the earth. A Met Office weather map shows that at 10pm the majority of the county will be shrouded in thin cloud. Huge clouds of electrically-charged particles are given off by solar storms and travel millions of miles, some eventually colliding with the earth. Fortunately for those who missed the show, the Met Office says the lights may be visible again this evening. Last night (February 26) the skies were lit up with spectacular colours leaving people across the UK in awe.

As it does, it lights up particles in the sky that can make for a swirling, bright natural light show. [However, the cycle of the Sun means that we are entering into a particularly busy phase. That means there should be some chance to see the spectacle – though the reduced activity means that it will not come as far south as it has over recent nights. That means Tuesday is probably the last chance to see any of the northern lights – and it will not be visible right across the country in the way that it has been in recent days. The spectacle is particularly notable in that it requires no special equipment or knowledge to see – only relative darkness and a patience to wait for them to appear in the sky. In recent days, increased activity at the Sun meant that the northern lights or aurora borealis were as visible as far down the country as southern England.

The Aurora Borealis shone once again - is a hat trick on the cards with more showings tonight?

Website AuroraWatch has also returned its alert to green from the amber level on Sunday and Monday with 'no significant activity' predicted. Northern lights: Pilot treats passengers to dazzling aurora view (BBC News)

The captain dimmed the lights and made a 360-degree turn so passengers could see the display.

Ms Mapp said: "After days of jumping in the car at any opportunity to try and find the northern lights without spotting them, finally getting to see them in the sky was the perfect ending to a very special trip." "But we were sitting on the right-hand side and after a few minutes the pilot switched back and did a 360 loop around for everyone to see." Mr Groves said he and his fiancee Jasmine Mapp were on the right-hand side of the plane, which took off from Reykjavik, and would not have been able to see the lights if it was not for the "very kind" pilot.

Will the Northern Lights be visible tonight? When to see the Aurora ... (iNews)

People across the UK were treated to a rare view of the Northern Lights again on Monday night, with the phenomenon visible as far south as Devon.

The best conditions to view the lights are when the sky is dark and clear of any clouds. North-facing coasts produce some of the best viewing locations. [Also known as Aurora Borealis](https://inews.co.uk/inews-lifestyle/travel/how-watch-northern-lights-mumurations-solstice-uk-winter-1963145?ico=in-line_link), the Northern Lights don’t often come to the UK, and when they can be seen, it tends to be only in the most northerly parts of the country. When the magnetic polarity of the solar wind is opposite to the Earth’s magnetic field, the two magnetic fields combine allowing these energetic particles to flow into the Earth’s magnetic north and south poles. [The Met Office](https://inews.co.uk/topic/met-office?ico=in-line_link) explains: “Solar winds are charged particles that stream away from the Sun at speeds of around one million miles per hour. Oxygen gives off green light when it is hit 60 miles above the Earth, while at 100-200 miles, rare, all-red auroras are produced.

A solar storm plus clear weather have meant spectacular sights in the night skies above the UK since Sunday.

Increasingly cloudy skies mean the chances of spotting the northern lights over the UK for a third night in a row are “severely limited”, the Met Office said.

'Awe-inspiring': UK readers share their northern lights snaps (The Guardian)

Seeing the aurora borealis so far south is highly unusual, and was thanks to very clear skies.

I don’t seek out the northern lights specifically; I like hillwalking at night, so the aurora is an occasional companion when I’m out on the hills after dark. I have been fortunate enough to see the northern lights several times before in Finland and Norway, but to do so just 10 minutes from where I live was an incredible experience. The photo was taken on Sunday 26 February at 10.32pm. I have been going out to take photos of the aurora for years and this is one of the best displays I have seen. I’ve lived here for 20 years and have seen them most years, but this was one of the best and most colourful displays I have seen. It’s unheard of to see the aurora so far south, so it really did make the adventure (on a school night!) very worthwhile.

If you missed the recent spectacle, the best places to seek out the northern lights include Stockholm in Sweden, where these mesmerising green aurorae were captured over the city on 27 February. There may be one last chance tonight to see the northern lights caused by the recent coronal mass ejection in the far north of Scotland, perhaps near the coastal village of Hopeman, where stunning pictures were taken on 26 February. Together with an especially high-speed solar wind, aurorae have reached locations such as Anglesey in north Wales and Dorset in the south of England.
