Friday favourite: The forgotten 1990s F1 car adored by a Spa legend (autosport.com)

Compared to his successes in touring cars and sportscars, Eric van de Poele's Formula 1 career was thoroughly unfulfilling. But the five-time Spa 24 Hours ...

“And then one day with your old friend you go to Roma with a van and a trailer and you bring back your F1 car at home. Okay I knew the track, but it was not an advantage compared to the other ones" Eric van de Poele He didn’t know it at the time, but it would mark the end of his F1 career. “But the potential of that car was really incredible, it’s why I was competitive straight away in Spa. His race unfortunately didn’t last long, ending with a spin on lap three, but on home turf at Spa van de Poele was in confident mood. “It was incredible, in my warming lap I was qualified!” van de Poele remembers. For a comparison, as the slowest team of 2022 Williams was 2.516% off the pace. We knew the team was really down, but we had fantastic way to work together.” He’d stepped up to F1 in 1991 aboard the Modena Lamborghini and came within a whisker of a giantkilling fifth place in the San Marino Grand Prix, but never again managed to qualify it for a race. However van de Poele regards it not only as the best F1 car he drove in anger, but also “the best car I had on a track”. “I was just sad to have done only three races], I had not really a lot of time to be in the car. But BMW’s all-conquering M3 tin-top, with which van de Poele also won the DTM crown in 1987, and the Maserati MC12 GT1 he took to three wins between 2005 and 2008 are beaten to top spot by an unlikely candidate.

Jost Capito has been replaced as team principal by former chief Mercedes strategist James Vowles and the team have a new driver rookie in American Logan Sargeant. The fear from his rivals is that Max Verstappen could march away with a hat-trick of titles in 2023. Toto Wolff is adamant the W14 has seriously untapped potential, the problem was there were a few gremlins in testing although not to the extent of a year ago. Team principal Guenther Steiner can currently be seen swearing his way through another season of Netflix series Drive to Survive. But Alonso and Aston have been the surprise package of winter testing ahead of what looks like their break-out season. They are one of only four unchanged driver lineups for the season, which begins with team principal Fred Vasseur having left for Ferrari.

It's the first race of the 2023 F1 season and Red Bull look to be favourites. Who can stop Verstappen? Here's how to catch the action.

If you’re seeking a safe and secure VPN, we’d recommend Nyck de Vries will be back after his fill-in appearance for Alpha Tauri last season and Nick Hulkenberg is back in an F1 sit after a few seasons out, driving for American outfit Haas. Who follows behind will be interesting, with Ferrari Scuderia, Mercedes and surprisingly Aston Martin thought of as being in the next pack. F1 Fantasy: top picks, predictions and new rules for 2023 season (Motor Sport)

The best driver and constructor F1 Fantasy picks for the 2023 Bahrain Grand Prix, including some need to know tips and tricks.

Drivers will be awarded for individual qualifying performance, with ten points given to pole position all the way down to 1 point for tenth. Players will have access to four ‘chips’, only one of which can be used to give you a boost before each race weekend. Ahead of each race, you will have two free transfers to customise your driver or constructor lineup. There is now no benefit in timing your transfers during the week: dynamic pricing used to allow players to trade their way to astronomical team values. Mini-league competitions, running over a small number of race weekends will offer the chance to win more. Red Bull gives you a good chance of bagging the ten bonus points for performing the fastest stop in each race: it was fastest in ten of last year’s 22 GPs. There’s a prominent countdown clock on the team selection page, to help you make the cut. A speedy team can also claim further points for the secind- and third-fastest stops. So if Logan Sargeant clinches pole after a haphazard Monte Carlo qualifying session, that’s probably your opportunity to play it. Fast-starters can rack up points from the moment that lights go out, with bonuses for overtaking and making up places (1 point per place in both cases). If they perform strongly, then their price should rise, giving you the opportunity to sell at a profit. However, they also represent an opportunity given their low values at the start of the season.

Should Red Bull deem Perez no longer worth the trouble, a scenario that will reveal its answer as the season progresses, expect conjecture about a replacement to intensify accordingly. If McLaren continue to labour, so might their hold on Norris despite the contract between the parties. Max Verstappen has F1 rivals running scared as he chases third ... (The Guardian)

On the eve of the season-opener, Lewis Hamilton and Lando Norris fear the Red Bull driver's dominance is only beginning.

If Mercedes and Ferrari can bring the fight to Red Bull this season, it will be a challenge enthusiastically embraced. He has the perfect understanding of where the limit is in every aspect. Red Bull look to be the new dominant force in F1. It was a consummate display of how far the driver has come since he made his debut at 17 in 2015 – the impetuousness, poor decision-making, overaggressiveness and a somewhat all-or-nothing approach that earned him the “Mad Max” moniker was nowhere to be seen. “He has changed quite a bit over the last few years. He just has a very good ability to understand the limit at any instance, rain or shine. It will be a long road to the championship but Verstappen goes in as firm favourite. With a Red Bull car that looks formidable it might be considered that the only real threat to Verstappen is Verstappen himself, but of such a fragility there is no sign. “I don’t think he will slip up,” the Briton said. I don’t think they were even pushing at the end and they were still way ahead. His car comfortably held the edge over Ferrari and Mercedes in testing, its excess weight long stripped out and honed to Verstappen’s driving style of having a pointy front-end on turn-in. If anything the men who must compete against him warn he is only growing stronger, among them Lewis Hamilton, well-placed to recognise a champion’s traits.

F1 drivers' gruelling physical training from pre-season to unique gym ... (Mirror.co.uk)

The new F1 season gets underway in Bahrain this weekend and Red Bull star Sergio Perez's Performance Coach has explained the training drivers go through at ...

One or two years ago we were competing around that and trying to get the four minute per kilometre for 5k, so 20 minutes, and Checo was really close. We’re running 5.9km, a whole lap around Silverstone, encouraging people to run that distance each week over four weeks for the chance to be able to run here themselves as well. From Friday to Sunday, it’s challenging but at the same time exciting to get through that time.” In reality, most come in around the 5km mark, with Silverstone 5.9km long. That’s the most unique part of driving a racing car.” You can do some planks where you are holding the weight with your head instead of your arms. Likewise, there are plenty of standard weightlifting exercises such as deadlifts, squats and bench press and many more which they might use to build general strength. Amongst those hoping to have gained an edge is Red Bull Racing driver Sergio Perez, who has been working hard under the watchful eye of his Performance Coach, Jose Canales.
