Watching Spencer visit the same villages, bathe in the same natural pools and be blessed in the same temples is incredibly poignant. When Spencer delivers the body of a sherpa to a local family, it is not a happy reunion. The only tears come from Spencer’s wife Vogue Williams, who gave birth just eight days before her husband was due to leave for Nepal, and Dave Rodney, a Canadian who was on the same expedition as Michael in 1999. His whole family, he explains, are stoic to a fault, each of them very pragmatic about both Michael’s death and his potential return home. “I’m going to find that difficult,” he retorts, and for a moment you worry Spencer is going to insist on travelling further up the mountain and risking the same fate as his brother. But it’s not that straightforward: they’re basing their entire search off a five-year-old photo and, effectively, blind faith that it’s Michael, who sadly is one of the hundreds that have lost their lives trying to climb the highest peak in the world. Over the course of Finding Michael, he retraces his older sibling’s steps through Nepal in the hope of retrieving his body and more importantly, giving his parents and siblings the closure they need.

Finding Michael is streaming on Disney+ in a new documentary by Spencer Matthews and Bear Grylls.

I was to be with two other people and he was to be with his guide. Obviously then when the disaster happened and Michael never came home it was a devastating blow for everyone. Canadian climber Dave Rodney, who had been on the expedition with Michael, also features in the film. Dave Rodney said that Michael was the “best mate I could ever have hoped for on the mountain”, and he is “honoured and humbled” to be a part of the documentary. “He was going to be a year younger than me and I was all fired up and came for a chat and I was full of ‘You gotta go for it, you’re gonna smash it’. “Fortunately, Dave had this incredible film that I hadn’t seen so I saw it in Canada for the first time and it’s the first time I’d heard Michael speak since he was alive, since I was 10.”

Disney Plus has issued a statement on the delayed documentary Finding Michael, which failed to premiere on the streaming platform on the scheduled date.
