Rangers vs Kilmarnock – LIVE updates (Scottish Daily Record)

Michael Beale expects a response and his players know they must find one against Derek McInnes' side.

The defender nodded the ball past Allan McGregor who couldn't get a hand to hit. After a tough week, an early goal was just what Rangers needed to settle any anxiety after the disappointment suffered in the loss to [Celtic](https://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/all-about/celtic-fc) at the national stadium. Collum was quick to flash the yellow. Rangers are definitely showing a bit of complacency in this second 45 and Kilmarnock will feel their goal is deserved. On the stroke of half-time Willie Collum was sent to the VAR screen to check on a possible penalty. [Connor Goldson](https://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/all-about/connor-goldson) and Fashion Sakala before a James Tavernier penalty on the stroke of half-time was rich reward after a dominant first half showing. His efforts were summed up when he sprinted full pelt to catch a loose ball and save his side conceding a goal kick as well as showing his trademark tidy neat and tidy passing. Overall there's still a lot of positives to take for Michael Beale. James Tavernier gave Walker no chance in the Killie goal with the pen to make it 3-0 at the break. Derek McInnes wanted a reaction and got one through Jeriel Dorsett who pulled one back for the Rugby Park men on the 60th minute. Fashion Sakala doubled the lead for the Ibrox side in the 25th minute after he linked up with Antonio Colak in the 18-yard box. Ange Postecoglou’s [Celtic](https://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/all-about/celtic-fc) will now go to St Mirren on Sunday lunchtime as they look to regain their nine-point lead at the summit.

Rangers must block out their Viaplay cup final defeat as they return to Scottish Premiership action against Kilmarnock on Saturday.

The Light Blues' attacking threat proved too much for the visitors to handle, with Morelos grabbing a brace in an impressive performance. Lundstram pulled the ball back for Morelos who was unmarked, and from close range, the striker volleyed into the net to confirm the three points. With a dominant lead, Rangers switched off at the back to allow Christian Doige to pull a goal back after the restart, but Beale's side were quick to double their lead once again as they regained control. Cantwell duped his marker before sliding a cross into Morelos, and on the half-volley, the striker hit the ball through the legs of the 'keeper. Rangers were dominant in the first half at the Ibrox, with the Light Blues' front three causing all sorts of problems for the opposition. The defeat was [Michael Beale's](https://www.glasgowlive.co.uk/all-about/michael-beale) first as Rangers boss since his appointment in December last year, putting an end to a 14-game unbeaten run.

Beale has made four changes from the side that crashed to defeat at Hampden. Morelos has been dropped to the bench after his Hampden huff. Rangers could bounce back from that Hampden defeat today and close the gap on Ange Postecolgou's side in the league to six points, with Celtic not playing till tomorrow against St Mirren. But despite winning week in week out, the gap has remained at nine points, with Celtic matching Rangers all the way. Beale has dropped his the prolific target man who has a strong record against the Ayrshire club. Beale chucked the new recruits on just after Rangers pulled one back with a Morelos goal in the 2-1 loss, with many pundits asking why they were never used from the start. Michael Beale's men eased past Derek McInnes' side to reduce Celtic's Premiership lead to six points.

There were strong appeals for a penalty but Collum and VAR deemed nothing to be wrong. However there was an argument that it was reckless and VAR may have sent Collum over for a review. VAR didn't intervene on this occasion which suggests he was given the benefit of the doubt that it was accidental. [Connor Goldson](https://www.footballscotland.co.uk/all-about/connor-goldson) put the Light Blues in front after six minutes as he pounced from a corner before a Fashion Sakala strike and James Tavernier penalty ensured Rangers led comfortably at the break. VAR played it's part in Rangers winning a penalty on 43 minutes after Alebiosu handled the ball inside the box while tussling with Ryan Kent. Derek McInnes' side, inspired by the half-time substitution of former Ger Jordan Jones, showed character to remain competitive until the final whistle but are still yet to register an away win in the Scottish Premiership this season at 15 attempts.

Rangers 3 Kilmarnock 1: Fans send Ibrox board message in league ... (HeraldScotland)

RANGERS continued their unbeaten Premiership run to reduce the deficit to Celtic to six points in the title race with victory over Kilmarnock.

The visitors had to strike again quickly if they were going to produce a remarkable fightback and time was soon against them. Rangers played with more purpose from the off and they carried more of a threat. The longer Killie kept it goalless, the greater chance they had of ending their wretched record on the road this term. The position of chairman Douglas Park continues to divide It is fair to say that many didn’t agree with their manager’s calls before or during the game or his justifications for them afterwards. When Tavernier fired home from the spot with just seconds of the half remaining, that was that for Rangers. The other three that dropped out – John Lundstram, Glen Kamara and Alfredo Morelos – could have no complaints. Quite how Beale’s side could be so commanding and then so nervous either side of the interval is a mystery. It was a case of job done for Rangers. It was a strange afternoon in many ways. Rangers owed the Ibrox crowd an apology and a performance. Goldson made the decisive intervention to set Beale’s side on their way.

Stephen Craigan was bemused as Connor Goldson put Rangers early vs Kilmarnock, branding the visitors' set piece record for and against "crazy".

They needed a response and they’ve got it early on.” But the way they fell off the pace after the break, conceding a goal to Jeriel Dorsett, almost one to Ash Taylor, and Allan McGregor going close to giving a way a penalty, was dreadful. It was a good thing that Rangers got the early goal and put themselves out of sight before half time because what started as a procession turned into a mess after the break.

The 2 big Willie Collum Rangers vs Kilmarnock calls in focus as ... (Scottish Daily Record)

There were two major incidents from the clash at Ibrox as Derek McInnes was left incensed but pundits' opinions were split.

It's a harsh one on the defender but it comes from an error as he misjudges the flight of the ball. He said: "I'm going to disagree with everyone, I thought McGregor punched the ball out for a corner and then collided with the Kilmarnock player. This one didn't even go to VAR and nothing was given but the pundits were almost unanimous it should have been given. McInnes pulled no punches in his assessment of the incident as Allan McGregor tangled with Rory McKenzie and brought the winger down after he'd punched the ball out for a corner. The Killie boss did admit that the decision to award Rangers a penalty in the first half, while confusing at first sight, appeared to be right enough on a replay. But Killie boss McInnes was left fuming his side weren't awarded a penalty for a foul by Allan McGregor on Rory MacKenzie that could have turned the game on its head if it was given.
