Scottish Women's Convention: First Minister's speech - 6 March 2023 (Scottish Government News)

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon's speech at the Scottish Women's Convention, International Women's Day 2023 event in The Scottish Parliament.

The cause of gender equality is unwon but if we work together, if we pull together, if we make sure sisterhood is something that we don't just talk about but live, then we will win that cause and we will win it in the generation that is coming after us. The talents of young women across our country are perhaps the biggest asset we have as a country so take confidence in the progress that has been made but as you take over the baton from older women, like me, even older women like Agnes, then do it knowing that you've got right on your side and you've got women like us on your side and at your back every step of the way. So my closing message to you today and I guess my closing message to this event as First Minister, and it goes to everybody in this chamber right now, but I guess it goes particularly to those young women that I am looking out at right now. All of these things are essential if we are going to continue the progress and overcome the challenges that we still face. And that’s the final issue I wanted to touch on, the importance of continuing progress in reforming the criminal justice system so that it works better for women. They will be controversial, but these and associated reforms to make the criminal justice system better for victims of sexual violence and sexual abuse are vital in making sure that we have a criminal justice system reflective of a society that works better for women and for girls. Agnes, on behalf of all of us, you are one of the true heroines of the Scotland’s women’s movement and I want to thank you for everything you do. But because women are still more likely to be primary carers, it is the case that if we help families, if we help children, we also disproportionately help women. We’ve got a feminist approach to foreign policy, which is vital in terms of some of the issues that the world is facing. That might be in part testament to the fact that the Convention recharges you with energy in a way that normal days in this chamber don’t! She doesn’t believe me now, and I need to look out the video to prove this to her, just as we finished and parliament rose, she shouted from there, ‘Auntie Nicola, meet me downstairs!’ And she refuses to believe that. That might be in part testament to the fact that this convention recharges you with energy, in a way that normal days in this parliamentary chamber don’t!

We’re a reflection of the women who paved the way, and are responsible for those still walking. The social campaign will roll out during the month of March and there will be a dedicated microsite. Throughout the month, we’ll highlight women-owned businesses, talent and artists through the food and vendors we bring in, our monthly corkboard series and our happy hours. Previously, Maggie worked in a supermarket and Vicky for a taxi company. Now I can lay a new hedge, and confidently use a chainsaw.

'It's a good opportunity to consider what an equitable workplace looks like for women'

Equity, on the other hand, recognises that each person has different circumstances, which means that particular resources and opportunities are needed to reach an equal outcome. But what is the difference between equality and equity? This year’s International Women's Day focuses on the theme of equity. We also share the experiences of our members – be that through the awards programme or events – to support women across our community to not only learn new skills, but also to inspire employers to think differently around the support they have in place to create an inclusive workplace. One of the ideas presented by the BCC is to collate case studies to complement research findings in order to bring to life what best practice and equitable business looks like. It includes short-term action to set up a Chamber Workplace Equity Commission, which would develop policies for Government and best practices for businesses enshrining equity in the workplace as part of its medium-term plan, and a long-term goal to move the dial on these findings.

International Women's Day 2023 puts equity above equality (Personnel Today)

It's easy to get frustrated by the wasted opportunity this creates for everyone.” We need to overthrow the archaic stereotypes associated with men and women” – ...

On the contrary, women stereotypically possess many traits that are invaluable to business such as problem-solving, communication, and empathy. As women, we have different experiences and we can bring a lot to the workplace from other areas of our lives. “Gender stereotypes are problematic, as they assume that there are differences between men and women in terms of skills and abilities – however very little data exists to back this up. However, it’s a key differentiating feature for women who face additional challenges due to the gender imbalance in the industry.” Women are strong and the opinion that we’re weak needs to change, even if our personality type is more caring than fiery and competitive.” “They are often built around traditional, male hierarchical ways of working but a lot of women prefer to work in a different way. Progress is slow, however; only 22% of companies globally publish their gender pay gap (up from 17% in 2022 and 15% in 2021). She cites new research from Indeed showing that nearly half (48%) of British women encountered barriers getting work, with the top barriers being bias and discrimination. “On this International Women’s Day, I encourage employers to commit to greater transparency,” says Leonard. For Ruth Leonard, senior director of sales at Indeed, this tortuous progress can be accelerated by moving away from the concept of equality and, as International Women’s Day is promoting, embracing equity. It’s easy to get frustrated by the wasted opportunity this creates for everyone.” The day arrives as several recent studies have pointed to frustratingly slow progress towards fairness and equality.

International Women's Day 2023 - our Women's Network (Southern Water)

And I really believe, particularly with our network, it should be a rich membership of men and women. One of my first tasks is implementing the many different ways there are to attract more women to work in in male dominated industries. I think the women's network can shine a light on some great examples we can share with the business, with the Executive, with the Senior Management Team - and wider - of how we want our business to operate. So, I’m going to develop a suite of events around career development, guest speakers, personal safety, mentoring and lots of other exciting things. It’s not a bad figure; but it’s not great, and I believe there’s much more we can do to increase it. But there’s a lot of work to be done.
