"The number of people arriving in the UK who seek asylum and require accommodation has reached record levels, placing unprecedented pressures on the asylum system," a spokesperson said. Mr Leyland said the impact of the continued use of hotels in Skegness to house asylum seekers would be "hard to judge". The Home Office said a record number of arrivals was "placing unprecedented pressures on the asylum system".
It's nothing new that Google Hotels has become the most relevant metasearch player, with nearly 85% share in 2022. Most hotels can see this in their own ...
It seems that customers who click on paid links are lower in the funnel (closer to the decision to book) than those who click on free booking links. We can see that the contribution of free booking links is growing rapidly for those hotels without paid campaigns. The conversion rate trend seems to have consolidated over time, with a 62% higher ratio for paid than for free booking links. This impressive growth is the result of Google expanding free booking links to search and maps in March 2022. Hotels with active paid campaigns tend to be larger and more sophisticated than those that only participate with free booking links. There are other reasons, which we analyzed in [this other post](https://www.mirai.com/blog/growing-contribution-of-metasearch-to-direct-revenue/). Despite some potential cannibalization between free and paid links, the sum of the two is growing, and that’s what matters to hotels. There are a number of reasons for this success: new placements for Google Hotels in search results and maps, the first metasearch to add a We selected more than 650 hotels that have had active paid campaigns in Google Hotel Ads for, at least, the last four years. Therefore, the entire Google Hotels’ contribution comes from free booking links. What’s more, in most cases, the direct entry occupies the first position within the organic results, increasing the visibility of the direct channel in a highly visible and free placement. [ free booking links](https://www.mirai.com/blog/free-booking-links-in-google-hotel-ads-everything-you-need-to-know/), in March 2021.

He said it was “still early days because we’re still pulling together all the information we’ve had from the Secretary of State’s response – it takes a little bit of time.” The council has previously written to the Home Office, suggesting it could pursue a judicial review against the continued use. Officers at East Lindsey District Council are building a case for potential action against hotels which have been used as hostels for asylum seekers. However, he said: “They’ve been there 18 months already so it’s not something we’re not use used to, but there will be additional pressures coming on.” The company is responsible for housing asylum seekers on behalf of the Home Office. East Lindsey District Council leader Councillor Craig Leyland said that Serco had extended contracts through the tourist season and beyond.
A well-known Coventry hotelier has poured scorn on the government's 'special treatment' of hotels housing asylum seekers. Rick Cressman, who runs Nailcote ...
A Government spokesperson said: "Hotels that have an agreement with the Home Office to provide accommodation to asylum seekers do not have any special VAT status and normal rules apply. One lot is expected to generate 20 per cent VAT for the Government and the others are generating four per cent. We are working hard with local authorities to find appropriate longer-term accommodation." And he blasted the fact they were subject to reduced rates of tax, [BirminghamLive reports](https://www.birminghammail.co.uk/news/midlands-news/boss-who-set-fire-tax-26352222). It's not an attractive proposition in my book." "That seems really quite counter-productive in my opinion. Rick Cressman, who runs Nailcote Hall on the outskirts of Coventry, has criticised what he brands an "unfair" system. According to HMRC, accommodation providers pay less VAT when a guest stays for over 28 consecutive days. Mr Cressman says asylum hotels have been "gifted" 100 per cent occupancy at good rates while also paying less VAT. "Business itself has been really quite solid. But we don't want to damage the solidity of our turnover by trying to pass on price rises to a level that damages demand. I think it is a very unfair state of play.

Business-focused hotels that survived the pandemic shutdowns are now facing other challenges, like difficulty accessing credit.
[Andrew Harrison](https://www.linkedin.com/in/andrew-harrison-00b1918a) said during the company’s Jan. [PYMNTS Data: Why Consumers Are Trying Digital Wallets](https://www.pymnts.com/study/new-payment-options-digital-wallets-consumer-finance/) These issues have also made it more difficult to sell hotel properties, according to the report. Now, unlike during the pandemic, the hotel owners are not getting relief money from the government that allows them to negotiate better terms on loans. Typically, hotel owners must refinance debt every three years — much more often than offices or retail centers that do so only every 20 years, the report said. Lenders are asking hotel owners to put up more capital because they are concerned that the changing habits of businesses are leading to lower occupancy rates, which in turn are causing declining property values, according to the report.

The CEO of Valor Hospitality, Euan MacGlashan, speaks candidly about his career progression and bursts any illusions you might harbour about the glamour present ...
“I see so many businesses or other hotels treat their staff really insincerely,” he noted, “and by doing that you take a colossal risk that they’ll do the same thing to the guests or to you.” I am a very hands-on CEO, which I think is important for the culture of the company,” he says. As such, one thing he wishes he could do more of is spend more time in the hotels with his team. As he recounted, he has to come up with the ways in which Valor will grow and how, as well as how long such endeavours will take – will it be three or five years? “It’s one of the few businesses that never sleeps; you’re dealing in human emotion and serving guests,” he says. He continued to work in luxury hotels, more specifically within F&B, during his time in South Africa from the age of 23.

From city trips to Porto and Lisbon to family vacations in the Algarve, these are the best hotels in Portugal for your stay.
The One Palácio da Anunciada has the best hotel pool in the capital, in our opinion, and we’ve done our due diligence (we’ve even got pruney pool fingers to prove it). [ Portugal](https://www.independent.co.uk/travel/europe/portugal?CMP=ILC-refresh) is fabulous. Everyone either surfs, cycles, does yoga or golfs – at The Oitavos, you can do all of the above, while staying in hyper-modern digs. Porto’s not the biggest of cities, but it is hilly and cut in two by the River Douro – so the location of Infante Sagres, right in the walkable cultural district, is priceless. Owned by a family in the Port trade since 1838, The Yeatman takes its food and drink so seriously, the outdoor swimming pool has been built in the shape of a decanter. Pine Cliffs is the place: a gorgeous, white-and terracotta clutch of seaside spaces – fish restaurant, beach café, champagne bar, spa, endless pools, tennis courts – that mean you never need to leave. You’re a meander from the beach, or a short cycle, which is within the Ria Formosa Nature Reserve, so you can expect deserted sand spits, pristine lakes, and incredible bird life, rather than the Algarve high rises you might have been expecting. On the left-hand lounger you might clock Ben Fogle and his brood, on the right a BBC broadcaster with baby – that’s the clientele at this family-focused hotel on the wilder, windier end of the Algarve. [The Oitavos](https://www.booking.com/hotel/pt/the-oitavos.en-gb.html?aid=2253923&label=b2288803) [Porto](https://www.independent.co.uk/travel/europe/portugal/porto-travel-guide-restaurants-things-to-do-b2223275.html), too, wins unexpected ‘wows’ from visitors amazed by the city’s riverfront dining, design boutiques, and old-meets-new architecture. [Martinhal](https://www.booking.com/hotel/pt/martinhal-resort.en-gb.html?aid=2253923&label=b2288803) Whether you’re in search of family-friendly digs, great views, foodie havens, stylish spas or relaxing beach breaks, we’ve rounded up our pick of the best hotels in Portugal.
From the World of Beatrix Potter to Scafell Pike, there really is something for everyone in Cumbria and these are the best boutique hotels in the Lake ...
Built in 1790, in its heyday it welcomed the likes of William Wordsworth and Beatrix Potter for glamorous social occasions (the former recited his famous “Daffodils” in the drawing room). The hotel’s refreshingly dog-friendly too (although it will set you back £25 per furry friend) and the grounds are ideal for long, head-clearing walks. With views stretching across to Bassenthwaite Lake, Skiddaw and the spellbinding Lakeland Fells, Armathwaite – which has stood on its site in one form or another since the 11th century – has all the trappings of a historic country house. From fairy-tale gardens to lakeside living, [spa escapes](https://www.independent.co.uk/travel/uk/best-spa-hotels-uk-a9676321.html) to houses where old meets new, there really is something for everyone. You’ll see it from the infinity pool at the Swim Club spa too, which is entirely encased in glass (there’s also a hot tub on the terrace for steamy evenings under the stars). More of a townhouse than a county pile, you’ll find artwork by Matisse, Picasso and Chagalle on the walls, and décor is a sophisticated mix of dove grey, soft silver and powder blue textiles. Adventurers are also catered for, though, and may be tempted to tackle the highest point in [England](https://www.independent.co.uk/travel/uk/england), Scafell Pike, or take a ferry across Lake Windermere. The restaurant serves up Michelin-starred fare (there’s also an expansive kitchen garden, charcuterie and the chef has a predilection for on-site pickling) and the surrounding grounds are speckled with roe deer and rare red squirrels. Through the windows, you’ll spot alpacas grazing in the gardens and, at the centre of the house, you’ll find the Source restaurant, which serves up seasonal produce. Harried city-dwellers will find the perfect spot to relax in The Forest Side, a beautifully renovated Neo-Gothic pile (now a restaurant with rooms) that dates back to 1853. The Joules suite is particularly pretty, with a comfy four-poster and homey design touches from the unmistakably British brand. Bursting with bucolic mountain tarns and rugged windswept fells, this picture-perfect landscape – bordered by the Pennines and the Irish sea – has provided inspiration for Romantic poets and children’s authors alike.

Hence visitors flock here from all over [the UK](https://www.independent.co.uk/travel/uk) and even farther afield. Nice perks include complimentary coffee and cake on arrival and retro sweets in the bedrooms. There are only six bedrooms, but all are decently sized and equipped with Bluetooth docking/charging stations, retro fridges, snacks and tea and coffee-making facilities. Snooze offers eight individually styled bedrooms, including two attic suites, all with BeeKind eco-friendly products, tea trays and Snooze-branded sticks of Brighton rock. We recommend the vibrant Pommery Room or the opulent Art Deco-styled Legacia Room, but each of the 12 updated and themed bedrooms across this attractive Georgian townhouse are the stuff of fantasy. What’s more, as Brighton’s first-ever boutique hotel with years of experience, Blanch House really delivers with the glamour. "I felt really stupid because I've never been close to being scammed," he says. "Hotels will very rarely contact you on WhatsApp," chief executive Kate Nicholls says. "I thought this must be OK," he tells BBC News. "I got a text message from my bank and I had a phone call from them and they said someone was trying to scam me out of my money." Booking.com said it had "actively been supporting our partners, as well as any potentially impacted customers" and continued "to make security and data protection a top priority". Booking.com confirmed to BBC News that "some accommodation partners had been targeted by phishing emails" but denied it had suffered a data-security breach.
