The actor takes an amusing look at ageing, meeting Jennifer Saunders and a septuagenarian dominatrix. It will make you yearn to go to the pub with her – but ...

If you hanker for more, you can get it elsewhere with a few clicks of the remote. We meet a group of women in their 80s and 90s supporting each other in an assisted living community, but they are all essentially mentally fit and mobile and no questions are asked about what happens if that changes. In fact, the whole question of how the sexes are differently affected by ageing is barely addressed, which is quite a glaring oversight. Then wipe again”), intolerance of alcohol (she has gone from waking up on pool tables after a grand night out to needing two days with the blinds shut after a single vodka). The first has her chatting to peers and older people, while in the second she meets The Young. So we go for a ramble round most of the points you would expect: facial hair, minor incontinence (“I go for a wee,” says Burke, “Wipe.

Kathy Burke: Growing Up, Channel 4 review: cheerful exploration of ... (Telegraph.co.uk)

Burke makes for an engaging host, but the show's guests, including Bill Bailey and Jennifer Saunders, are less insightful about middle-age.

The second episode is weaker, with Burke meeting a young “gig economy” worker who professes to love her job. In a world where every other 58-year-old female celebrity is doing their best to look 38, Burke’s attitude is admirable, and her cheery jokes about the reality of ageing are funny (particularly the one about needing to do more “lower carriage exercise”). Burke also met a 71-year-old woman who works as a dominatrix, having taken it up at 60 after a lifetime of more mundane jobs. Burke is 58 – or, in her own words, “Fifty-f---ing-eight.” She seems to be quite enjoying it, being quite free of vanity and feeling lucky to be here at all after contracting a superbug 15 years ago which took her very close to death. In this first of two programmes, Burke explored what it is to grow old these days.

Having explored what it means to be a woman and the role money plays in our lives, acclaimed actor and director Kathy Burke turns her attention to age.

Kathy spends time with Jennifer Saunders and Bill Bailey to find out if they are accepting ageing or are in a fight to retain their youth. In this episode, Kathy examines getting older and what might happen to her in later life, and learns from others who are defying the limits of old age and are glad to be grey, most of the time, achy joints permitting. As she celebrates turning 58, naturally Kathy contemplates getting older and explores the lives and experiences of the old and the young.

Fortunately, even if it does always seem as though we’re peering into the story from the outside, there’s no denying that this is quite a story to peer into. He was given his big break by an unexpected hero of the civil-rights movement – Hugh Hefner, who invited him to perform at the Playboy club in LA. Thirty-three years on, it’s a protest that continues to fall on deaf ears, as we saw once again in the first part of Kathy Burke: Growing Up (Wednesday). If our own Lionel Shriver received royalties for every headline and programme title based on her 2003 novel We Need to Talk about Kevin, she’d surely be filing for The Spectator from a solid gold house. The following night she was back for Growing Up part two, in which she explored what it’s like to be young today. Back in 1990, Grandpa from The Simpsons wrote a letter of protest to TV-makers.
