Met Office says heavy snow may cause serious travel disruption as freeze forecast to continue across UK until at least Friday.

Spring and autumn are transition seasons between summer and winter in the UK, and can be highly variable, the forecaster noted, and statistically it is marginally more likely to snow in March than it is in December. The Met Office has also issued several milder yellow weather warnings for snow covering much of the UK from Wednesday to Friday. Dr Agostinho Sousa, the head of extreme events, urged people to check on vulnerable family, friends and relatives, as the cold weather “can have a serious impact on health”, and warned those over the age of 65 or with a pre-existing medical condition to heat their homes to at least 18C. He added that there was also considerable snowfall in March 2018 and 2013. Snow will have settled quite widely in central parts of the UK as we move into Thursday morning, leaving tricky conditions for the morning travel period.” “Anyone who isn’t confident with winter driving might want to postpone their journeys until temperatures increase,” he said.

The Sunday after that (March 19) is also tracked to be a snow day for some - bringing the total to four upcoming blizzards. However, late on Tuesday (March 14) and earlier on Wednesday (March 15) another bout of snow hits, according to WX Charts. UK weather: Snow causes disruption as Arctic blast continues - BBC ... (BBC News)

An amber weather warning for heavy snow has been issued for parts of the Midlands and the north of England.

This holds some truth but probably not for the reason you think. While temperature is linked, it is actually about the amount of moisture in the air needed for it to snow. In the UK, some of the heaviest snowfall can occur when the temperature is 0-2C. In the Republic of Ireland, the second highest level has been issued for 13 counties for snow across Ulster, Connacht as well as parts of Munster and Leinster. Forecasters have been warning about travel today and in the last few moments East Midlands Airport has been forced to temporarily shut its runway. As we've been reporting, that is the second highest level of warning that can be issued by the Met Office and it will last from 15:00 on Thursday until 04:00 on Friday. "Significant disruption" to transport including flights, power lines and phone network coverage is likely in the regions covered by the warnings. In Wales, the amber snow and ice warning is in place from noon until 09:00 on Friday, stretching from the north coast to Radnorshire The areas stretch from Stoke-on-Trent to Durham, North Wales and parts of Northern Ireland. Parts of Berwickshire saw some snow – with the A1 affected in places – but most main roads remained clear and no schools have had to close. "Significant disruption" to transport including flights, power lines and phone network coverage is likely in the regions covered by the warnings, the Met Office warns The Met Office has issued three amber warnings for "strong winds bringing blizzard conditions" and up to 16in (40cm) of snow for an area stretching from Stoke-on-Trent to Durham, North Wales, and Northern Ireland

UK weather - latest: Level 3 alert issued for England as more snow ... (Sky News)

Latest weather updates as alerts are issued by the Met Office, health authorities and the National Highways Agency as up to 40cm of snow is forecast for ...

The Met Office has said the periods of heavy snow are likely to cause disruption to travel and impact infrastructure. "You may want to consider the impact of the weather on your family and your community and whether there is anything you need to do ahead of the severe weather to minimise the impact," it said. The Met Office has issued two amber warnings for "strong winds bringing blizzard conditions" and up to 40cm of snow for an area stretching from Stoke-on-Trent to Durham, and North Wales. The warning means some roads and railways are likely to be affected by the adverse weather conditions, with people should expect longer journey times, and there could be some injuries from slips and falls. An amber warning is issued when there is the possibility of travel delays, road and rail closures, power cuts and the "potential risk to life and property". As the Arctic blast continues to cause freezing temperatures and "blizzard conditions" across the country, the Met Office has issued several amber weather warnings for snow and ice. "Failure to do so could incur a fine, but more importantly could place your life, the lives of your passengers and the lives of those around you in danger," the RAC says. In the eyes of the law, you need to get rid of that snow before you go. Most of us have been in that situation, and some may have been tempted to drive off anyway, but the bottom line is you need a clear view of the road before you do. This is supported by the section 41D of the Road Traffic Act 1988, meaning it is a legal requirement to have a clear view of the road ahead before you set off.
