After that first screening in Berlin, I thought it would be great to score the film with an instrument that dates back to that era, and that also works like a machine. The current times, the strong script and the strong execution are also part of it. What was most difficult was actually not to put too much pathos and too much heroism into the music. And I felt like it needed a religious theme to go with the powerful war machine sound. I also thought about the fact that these five young men who go to war lose everything they dreamed of in a relatively short period of time, everything they actually are as humans. The only way to do that was to take short, iconic elements and have them pop up again and again, like an art installation.

It’s also one of the reasons why a film that has been regarded so well internationally has been panned at home. “War has come so close to us this year,” added Roth. “No book is so good that you can’t turn it into a terrible film,” wrote Süddeutsche Zeitung critic Hubert Wetzel back in October, claiming Berger’s adaptation did not do justice to the 1920s literary classic. Accepting the awards, Swiss director Edward Berger thanked Felix Kammerer for his role as Paul Bäumer, the 17-year-old German soldier at the heart of the story.
With All Quiet on the Western Front having won plaudits at the Oscars and the Baftas, John Newsinger recalls how the author was persecuted.
The presiding judge made clear that she was being executed in place of her brother, and she was beheaded on 16 December 1943. It was a powerful update of All Quiet, exploring the horrors of German militarism and fascism on the Eastern Front. They denounced it as a “Judenfilm” and attacked anyone in the audience they thought looked Jewish. If he had not done this then he would have certainly been rounded up when the Nazis came to power and thrown into a concentration camp. By the end of the year, it had sold more than a million copies in Germany, 600,00 copies in Britain and 200,000 in the United States. It was an international success and was made into a Hollywood film the following year.
