At the Oscars, the guys dressed like it was prom night (British GQ)

From Dwayne Johnson and Samuel L Jackson to Paul Mescal and Paul Dano, the Oscars 2023 red carpet was awash with prom night style.

He's been at it [all awards season](https://www.gq-magazine.co.uk/fashion/article/seth-rogen-prom-king-style). [Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson](https://www.gq-magazine.co.uk/fashion/article/dwayne-johnson-fuchsia-suit-2022), the hardest, nicest guy in Hollywood, served up a deliciously soft fit for his go at taking the prom king crown. [Seth Rogen](https://www.gq-magazine.co.uk/fashion/article/seth-rogen-january-2023-style) was there too, doing what Seth Rogen does best. But did we really expect to see a mash-up of all the greatest and worst Hallmark movies in existence? Most (American) teens are conditioned to think that prom is the most important night of their lives. They did prom night.

The 23 Best-Dressed Stars At The 2023 Oscars (British Vogue)

Many of the stars chose designs that clashed the traditional with the contemporary, resulting in looks that felt familiar (glamorous and glitzy!) yet entirely fresh. It was an experiment in less is more dressing: [breakout colour](https://www.vogue.co.uk/fashion/gallery/bridal-trend-oscars-2023) of the evening: stars leaned into minimal, if not slightly bridal, looks. Hong Chau opted for a soft pink Prada column gown, complete with a black sequined train. That’s not to say the night was devoid of colourful attire (though the literal carpet was champagne-hued instead of red). Best Actress nominee Michelle Williams, for one, shined in her Chanel Couture dress that included a sheer, embellished cape overlay.

Anger, blame, recriminations, a controversy that would be stoked and stoked and stoked some more by those with no interest in the magic of the moving image. Yeoh – accepting the statue from Halle Berry, the first Black woman to win the same award – spoke of the “little boys and girls who look like me watching tonight: this is a beacon of hope and possibilities”. I spent a year in a refugee camp, and somehow I ended up here on Hollywood’s biggest stage,” he said (quite something to hear after the bleak week in British politics we’ve just lived through). But as they rounded out the night with Best Picture, taking the film’s tally to seven gongs, it felt… It was, as if we could forget, the year of The Slap and the soon-to-be-unbearable discourse was just beginning. But perhaps more importantly, the one that the movies needed.

Yeoh's co-star Jamie Lee Curtis, 64, won her first Oscar for supporting actress as did Ke Huy Quan, who won best supporting actor.

“My journey started on a boat,” he said. Last year the UK won six. Elsewhere on the night, Elizabeth Banks tripped as she took to the stage to present the award for best visual effects, which went to Avatar: The Way Of Water, but quickly managed to steady herself. Vietnam-born American star Ke Huy Quan received a standing ovation as he took to the stage after claiming best supporting actor for his role in Everything Everywhere All At Once, becoming the first person from an Asian background to win the category. The actress, who is the daughter of Hollywood stalwarts Janet Leigh and Tony Curtis, added: “And my mother and father were both nominated for Oscars in different categories, I just won an Oscar.” Taking to the stage, she said: “For all the little boys and girls who look like me, this is a beacon of hope and possibilities.

Michelle Yeoh Made History With Her 2023 Oscars Win (British Vogue)

On Sunday night, Michelle Yeoh became the first Asian actor to win the coveted best actress award at the Oscars 2023.

She’s 84, and I’m taking this home to her – she’s watching right now, in Malaysia, with my family and friends. Everything Everywhere All at Once – the film Yeoh starred in as Chinese-American immigrant mother Evelyn Wang – roundly swept the 2023 Oscars with a whopping seven wins (including Best Picture, to roaring applause from the audience). [over two decades](https://www.vogue.co.uk/arts-and-lifestyle/article/michelle-yeoh-best-actress-oscar-race) since an actor of colour won a Best Actress award (that would be Halle Berry, who presented Yeoh with her award on Sunday), and Yeoh noted the lineage that had brought her to the point of receiving the highest honour in acting, saying: “I have to dedicate this to my mom, all the moms in the world, because they are really the superheroes, and without them, none of us would be here tonight.
