Unions close to pay deal to avert more NHS strikes (BBC News)

The offer in England includes a bonus for this year and a higher pay rise for next year than planned.

"We are working really hard to try and solve these issues," he told BBC Breakfast. The government had given NHS staff a pay rise of 4.75% this year on average and had originally suggested a 3.5% increase in April. The deal includes a bonus likely to be in excess of £1,000 for this year and a rise of close to 5% for the next financial year starting in April.

NHS strikes: Government and unions reach pay offer for nurses and ... (The Independent)

Exclusive: Nurses and ambulance workers offered 5% pay rise in move that could bring an end to walkouts.

Unions and the government have been locked in talks all week. And they have added to the care backlog unnecessarily.” If it did, that would be a material alteration to the spending plans contained in this week’s Budget before the ink is dry,” he said. “We take this to mean that the deal is fully funded rather than relying on raids on NHS budgets, taking money away from key services. “Obviously how these things are funded are a matter for the chancellor,” he said. Rishi Sunak also insisted frontline services will “absolutely not” be affected by the pay deal. She said the offer was “far from perfect”, but added: “GMB members should rightly be proud of themselves. Shadow health secretary Wes Streeting dubbed Mr Barclay “last minute dot com”. Asked for details, Mr Barclay insisted it will not come at the expense of patients. The offer also includes two one-off bonuses for this year, an issue which has been at the heart of the dispute. Unison’s head of health Sara Gorton said: “It’s a shame it took so long to get here. The offer covers all NHS staff except doctors, who are on a different contract.

Nurses and ambulance staff offered 5pc pay rise (Telegraph.co.uk)

Unions asked for a pay rise above inflation - but refused to put any submission forward amid a bitter dispute with the government.

Strike action will continue to be paused while they are consulted. Importantly this deal is also affordable for the taxpayer and continues to deliver on my promise to halve inflation. For 2023/24, the government is offering Agenda for Change staff a 5 per cent consolidated increase in pay, worth at least £1,065. This is on top of the pay increase of at least 4% they received for 2022/23 last year, as recommended by the independent Pay Review Body process, worth at least £1,400. Earlier this year, the Department of Health and Care recommended a rise of 3.5 per cent for 2023/24, as had the Treasury. The proposal for the financial year 2023/24 would mean an average of 5 per cent rise for staff, worth at least £1,065.

Unions urge nurses, ambulance staff and other members to back deal including a one-off payment.

"We now await the decision of union members," he said. Strike action has also been paused in Wales and Scotland by most unions while new offers are considered. "I hugely admire the incredible work of NHS staff," he said. The two one-off payments for 22/23 we don't believe will create future inflationary pressures." The lowest paid will receive more. The offer, he claims, is "not really going to help recruitment in the NHS" because "only current staff members will get it".

The general secretary, Sharon Graham, said: “It is clear that this government does not hold the interest of workers or the NHS at heart.” Unison’s head of health, Sara Gorton, said: “It’s a shame it took so long to get here. Ms Harrison added: “This offer is far from perfect, and of course our NHS workers deserve more. While that process takes place any planned industrial action will be paused.” Rachel Harrison, GMB national secretary, said the Government has gone from refusing to talk about pay this year to putting an extra £2.5bn on the table, and that union members “should rightly be proud of themselves”. “Unison will now be putting this offer to the hundreds of thousands of health members in the union in the next few weeks, recommending acceptance. “In the coming days, health workers will have the chance to look at the full detail of what’s on offer and decide whether that’s enough to end the dispute. Union members will now vote on whether to accept the deal, with Unite refusing to recommend the offer to their members – although it added that would honour the outcome of the ballot. Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said: “The offer from government is not one that Unite can recommend to our members, but ultimately it is important that our members make the final decision. He said: “Obviously the starting position from a number of the unions was much higher and so both sides have worked together to reach a settlement which is both affordable to the wider taxpayer and then balances the very real pressures we recognise that NHS workers have been on.” This 6 per cent payment for this financial year consists of the 4 per cent already on the table, plus a one-off payment of 2 per cent the Government has called an “NHS Backlog Bonus” worth at least £1,250 per person.
