Gold Cup 2023: tips and best bets for Friday at Cheltenham Festival (Telegraph.co.uk)

Plus: Our race-by-race guide for the fourth and final day of the Festival, including tips for the Gold Cup.

The Brits will be routed again and the results of the Bumper, the novices’ hurdles and novice chases show it is going to be a long cycle of Irish dominance. It has been a week when racing has escaped from its worries and reminded the world what a great sport it is. 23 year old jockey Michael O’Sullivan is having a week to remember, and he may not be finished just yet as he has picked up a plum ride in the Festival’s closing race via the Willie Mullins-trained Spanish Harlem, who has yet to win in 3 starts this term but looks a highly-promising hurdler, with a mark of 135 looking more than lenient. What a week it has been: from Constitution Hill’s brilliance and the outpouring of emotion for Honeysuckle, watched by over 1.3 million on ITV, to underdogs winning and punters slaying the bookmakers. Since ITV took over the television rights in 2017, this is the best Boodles Cheltenham Gold Cup we have had by a distance. Trainer Harry Derham has made a notably bright start to his training career so far this season and he will know plenty about Bob and Co, who has been twice a faller when fancied for the last two runnings of this race for Paul Nicholls. This race is run over the same course and trip as the Gold Cup, but is for amateur jockeys. One of the two Mares' races that was added to the schedule in 2021, with Willie Mullins winning both renewals. His ultra-shrewd trainer Emmet Mullins has campaigned Filey Bay exclusively in the UK so far this term and, with a mark of 141 that looks more than workable, not to mention the addition of a first-time tongue tie, Filey Bay could take all the beating. Noble Yeats looks set to run a career-best and can prove the one they all have to beat. The Irish have dominated any juvenile hurdle of note so far this season and it is little surprised to see them dominate the market in this year’s Triumph, not least due to the 7 runners Willie Mullins is sending forward in this 15-runner field. Skelton's Pembroke is well fancied, and is stepping back to the two-mile trip which has brought both of his wins this season.

This term Iroko is 2-2 in the handicap sphere for Oliver Greenall and Josh Guerriero, breaking his career duck over an extended two miles and three furlongs at Wetherby in November with a length-and-three-quarter margin from Foster’sisland. Recruited from France, where he ran twice ran with promise without getting his head in front, the five-year-old made the frame in Chepstow’s Finale Junior Hurdle – in its last running as a Grade 1 – and the Grade 2 Adonis Juvenile Hurdle at Kempton Park last winter. But his strong finish, a turnaround at the weights and the re-application of the visor that was worn at Aintree but has been dispensed with since, will help Noble Yeats turn things around over an additional furlong and 14 yards.

We've picked out the selections from the panellists at the recent Boylesports Cheltenham Preview night at the Bardic Theatre in Donaghmore, in aid of SVP.

“I’d be amazed if anything outside A Plus Tard and Galopin Des Champs won, but Minella Indo is too big a price. Jonny Dineen felt Noble Yeats was a good each-way alternative to those at the top of the market and Denis O’Regan agreed, stating: “I’d give Noble Yeats a chance. “His form round Cheltenham is top class and he’s got a good chance again, but Galopin Des Champs is a major stumbling block. He’s going to be very hard to beat, but so will A Plus Tard if he is back to his best. “He has a lot of class, pace, stamina, he jumps very well and he’ll improve from his last run. The Irish have won the last four Gold Cups and six of the last seven and the Willie Mullins-trained Galopin Des Champs is the strong favourite.

The Greatest Show on Turf rolls into day four after a packed week of action so far.

The bay kept up the good work when brushing aside Letsbeclearaboutit in a Grade 2 at Limerick. The son of Westerner put in another respectable shift when fourth in a Leopardstown Grade 1. The Gigginstown raider doesn’t lack pace so he can take advantage of a drop in class over 2m 4f. The gelding looked likely to relish tackling three miles when a good second on debut at Galway. The gelding looked smart when comfortably despatching Patricks Hill on debut at Punchestown. He stayed upwardly mobile when caning Harry Des Ongrais in a better event at the same venue. The bay took his form up yet another notch when putting Amrons Sage to the sword at Ludlow. However, the gelding put that experience to good use when crushing Magic Wave at Wetherby. He soon bagged a top-level win of his own when turning the tables on his rival in style at Aintree. The eight-year-old didn’t really cover himself in glory when unseating on his fencing bow at Carlisle. The filly justified her price tag by routing Zarak The Brave on debut for her new yard at Fairyhouse. However, he immediately atoned with a merciless defeat of Mr Incredible in a Grade 2 at Newbury.

After beating the British 5-2 on each of the first three days, this could yet be the afternoon when it ends up as a 7-0 thrashing for the first time. It is 99 years since Red Splash landed the first Cheltenham Gold Cup at 5-1, and preparations are well under way to celebrate its 100th anniversary next year, including a plan (and please don’t ask me why) to take the trophy to the highest points in England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales. Which is just as it should be on Gold Cup morning, when one of the season’s most storied and venerable races is just a few hours away. Nicholls has masterminded victory in far more prestigious Festival races but could not have looked more pleased at having finally put one over on the combined forces of Irish raiders sent into battle by Mullins and Gordon Elliott after so long. There are no such doubts about A Plus Tard (3.30) and he is an excellent bet at the available odds to become the second dual Gold Cup winner since 2003. Here’s a leading reason to fancy Rachael Blackmore aboard A Plus Tard in the Gold Cup.

Cheltenham Gold Cup 2023 - Tom's Tips (Devon Live)

After three days of thrilling action at Prestbury Park the festival closes today with the greatest race of them all - the iconic Cheltenham Gold Cup.

Winner of the 2021 Gold Cup and runner-up last year, Henry De Bromhead's has been lightly raced this year with just the one run at Tranmore in January. Second in a Grade One Novice Chase at last year's festival, he clearly likes the track and is not without an each way chance. Willie Mullins' eight-year-old was a winner of the 3m6f chase at last year's festival so stamina not in question. A winner of this season's King George VI Chase at Kempton and the Charlie Hall, Harry Cobden's mount is one of the leading form picks of the race. Winner of the Irish Gold Cup, his only blip in two years was falling at the last when miles clear in a Grade One Novices' Chase at the festival last year. But a troubled preparation, with his only run since last year's victory coming when he was pulled up in the Betfair Chase in November, means other's fancied more.

Noble Yeats is last year's Grand National winner and the more of a stamina test this is the better. If A Plus Tard gets close to last year's performance he will be in the frame. The Irish have dominated any juvenile hurdle of note so far this season and it is little surprised to see them dominate the market in this year’s Triumph, not least due to the 7 runners Willie Mullins is sending forward in this 15-runner field. Protektorat was third in this last year and is a doughty stayer. Though he won over three miles at Leopardstown when he saw off Stattler, he has not gone three miles two furlongs up the Cheltenham hill. His ultra-shrewd trainer Emmet Mullins has campaigned Filey Bay exclusively in the UK so far this term and, with a mark of 141 that looks more than workable, not to mention the addition of a first-time tongue tie, Filey Bay could take all the beating. The race for speedy juvenile hurdlers, the Triumph has produced numerous future Champion Hurdle winners while, remarkably, twice Grand National winner Tiger Roll won this in 2014. A Plus Tard is the defending champion, but has not had the best preparation, running just once since when he was pulled up. Skelton's Pembroke is well fancied, and is stepping back to the two-mile trip which has brought both of his wins this season. Horses like Mill Green, Camprond and Langer Dan have come back for second bites at handicaps and run well this year, so let's hope First Street can do the same. I like the chances of First Street for Nicky Henderson, who finished second to State Man in this last year. Willie Mullins and Dan Skelton have produced six of the last seven winners.
