Mother's Day? But we're gay parents (Evening Standard)

Tired of being asked what gay dads do on Mother's Day, gay dad Stu Oakley wonders if there's still a place for rewarding hyper-gendered parenting.

We sort of cancel each other out as one of us has to be the one to get out of bed and sort breakfast. Dare I even suggest that Mother’s Day is in fact a fairly toxic way for some straight men to atone for being so darn-right useless the rest of the year? The applause I’ve often got for being out alone with my kids is insulting, I’m just being a parent — don’t congratulate me on taking my kids out just because I am man. No, give me the equal parenting we get to enjoy for the remaining 364 days of the year in exchange for one day when neither of us gets special treatment. I’m just counting down the days till I can be wheeled out to a pub and have our grown children buy their old dads a big bottle of the most expensive wine on the menu on Father’s Day. Or those who can’t stand to be in the same room as their mother?

Mother's Day supermarket food deals from Aldi, Asda, M&S, Tesco ... (Mirror.co.uk)

A home-cooked meal is always a good, and often cheaper, option for a gift as well as a heartwarming gesture of love and appreciation.

[Tesco](https://www.mirror.co.uk/all-about/tesco) Clubcard holders can also get a main, side, dessert and drink for £12 - again, this deal isn't specific for Mother's Day. [Sainsbury's](https://www.mirror.co.uk/all-about/sainsburys) has a Taste the Difference meal deal for £12 - featuring a main, side, dessert and drink - although this one is not specific to Mother's Day. [Waitrose](https://www.mirror.co.uk/all-about/waitrose-ltd) is offering a dine-in for two meal deal which includes a main, side and dessert for £12.. For the added drink you can choose from a soft or alcoholic drink depending on what you prefer such as Appletizer, alcoholic and non-alcoholic Peroni and wine. Some of the mains include a chicken tagine or butternut squash and goats cheese lasagne, with lemon and thyme roast potatoes and green vegetables for sides. For those that want to dine from the comfort of their own home, the afternoon tea can also be ordered for collection from the store at a date and time that is convenient for you [Morrisons](https://www.mirror.co.uk/all-about/morrisons) has also created its own afternoon tea deal which it states on its website serves two people for £10.00 which is £5.00 per person. Aldi has made it easier for you and has compiled everything you need under the "Amazing Mother's Day Afternoon Tea" header on its website. [supermarkets](https://www.mirror.co.uk/all-about/supermarkets) have clocked onto this and are offering a wide range of Mother's Day offers to help sort you out. The first is the Extra Special Mother’s Day Roast Dinner Bundle for £19.25 and the other is its Extra Special Mother’s Day Continental Breakfast Bundle costing £12.55. Instead of offering a main, side and dessert they’ve created an afternoon tea menu for under £10. [Aldi](https://www.mirror.co.uk/all-about/aldi) has taken a different route.

Alternatively, you can let them know in advance that you will be around to chat on the day if they need or, if they are feeling up to it, you can plan something special to do with them on the day such as take them out to afternoon tea or plan a spa trip together. If a friend or family member has lost their child, it can be hard to know what to say or do to help, but Sands says that even the simplest of actions can be a thoughtful way to show your friend you’re there. [For years, doctors told me I was just being dramatic. “You are still a mother and your bond with your child, whether they are here or not, is something to be proud of,” Sands says.

Dan Walker: Mother's Day falls on my birthday this year – but the ... (iNews)

“Dad, what will it be like sharing your birthday with Mother's Day? Do we bring you breakfast in bed or mum?”. This was one of the questions our kids were ...

It is a brilliant event which brings together some of the top newsrooms in the country to answer a devilishly difficult set of questions whilst raising money for charity. If I close my eyes, I can still see the perfect condition Millennium Falcon that, for some inexplicable reason, she decided to swap for a “Sindy car” for one of my sisters. The only thing I have ever held against her is the fact that she once decided to give my prized possession away. It was a real pleasure to host the Ultimate News Quiz. I have visions of our rather bouncy Labrador Honey, trying to demolish the toast, dribbling profusely and jumping all over the bed like a lunatic. I won’t tell you what the kids and I have got for my wife, because I’m pretty sure she will read this article and that would ruin it. So Mum, if you’re sat reading this with a lovely bunch of flowers and some chocolates next to you, if I’m being honest… While my dad still steadfastly holds to that principle, our kids have been encouraged to embrace it a little more. The vast majority of countries follow the US example (so the day [ falls on 14 May](https://inews.co.uk/news/world/mothers-day-2022-when-date-uk-world-different-us-other-countries-explained-1617387?ico=in-line_link)) but here, we are celebrating it this weekend… It tends to fall on the fourth Sunday of Lent, three Sundays before Easter. [Mother’s Day](https://inews.co.uk/news/real-life/mothers-day-i-met-my-mum-adult-drug-addiction-912086?ico=in-line_link), or Mothering Sunday as my Auntie Gillian used to call it, is a movable feast. This was one of the questions our kids were posing this week.

In 2023, Mother’s Day in the UK falls on March 19th, a day that will be one of the happiest times of the year for many mothers and rightly so. While the recognition and acknowledgment that Mother's Day can be uncomfortable, it doesn't necessarily help everyone. It's yet another email reminder that I don't need or want because normally I delete anything and everything that comes my way in relation to it. My mum, Tina, died of pancreatic cancer on March 19th, 2021, when the whole world was grieving from the coronavirus pandemic. I wear the badge with a heavy heart, and have done for two years. I belong to the club nobody wants to belong to, the motherless-daughter group.

'I think Mother's Day is dumb – I'm expected to do everything ... (Mirror.co.uk)

One woman feels 'resentful' about Mother's Day because she's the only one without children in her family – so they expect her to to everything for them ...

According to the woman, it has become an "expectation" that she hosts Mother's Day every year. She added: "I too am responsible for the upkeep of two other humans but I never get a day off or any gifts. Mother's Day should be organised by the dads and children when old enough. For this Mother's Day she is cooking a roast dinner for 10 people, and has to "wash up everything" without getting any help, as well as serve everyone dessert and drinks. For others, a simple phone call or card might do the trick. So here we are."
