Still, I stand by the judgment that Anton and Giovanni’s Adventures in Sicily provides something a little better and a lot more charming than most of the products out of the travel series factory. They sing Tragedy in the car and O Sole Mio to test the acoustics of the Ear of Dionysius cave in Syracuse. The baseline of cynicism we have become accustomed to in these and many other programmes is gone. They are patient with each other, interested in each other, and Du Beke is unabashedly eager to learn about the places that mean so much to his pal. At first it seems as if Anton and Giovanni’s Adventures in Sicily is going to be very much more of the same thing we have seen too many times before. Soon, the bond between them is so irresistible that at times it brings you to the brink of tears.

Giovanni, confused, then replied with: "So why would you call the bird a smuggler? What does it smuggle?"
"No, the bird is not the smuggler. he then asked, "how do you say budgie, of the bird; 'squawk squawk'?" "I didn't bring the Speedos", Anton then replied. Unfortunately, the windy road to attempt to translate an idiom rather literally, ends in Anton's mild embarrassment and the nation's acute joy: "How do you say budgie smuggler in Italian?" "You didn't bring your Speedos with you?" "So you say 'piccolo ucello', and then you say smuggler," Anton continued, "the smuggler is somebody who brings something into the country, not through customs.

Were they about to generate a social media storm by killing one of these intelligent creatures for a lark? The joshing between Du Beke and Pernice felt laboured in comparison – something they felt almost contractually obliged to carry out. An early sequence of Du Beke attempting to explain to a barista, in his terrible Italian, how he liked his coffee prepared, didn’t bode well. In Gordon, Gino and Fred’s Road Trip, the sparring between the three is genuinely intriguing as they are each such noisy alpha males; it was almost like watching a wildlife documentary. And then BBC One gave us Amanda and Alan’s Italian Job, in which Amanda Holden and Alan Carr renovated a Sicilian hill-top apartment that Holden had bought for €1 (88p). It’s not hard to see inside the minds of the BBC’s commissioning editors: ITV has enjoyed great success by sending Gordon Ramsay, Gino D’Acampo and Fred Sirieix on their travels.

"I haven't even talked to my own dad about it. "When I saw the friend I admire and my dad being together it was beautiful."
