Live coverage from Oakwell as Darren Moore's Sheffield Wednesday side face the Reds in a mouth-watering derby that could have big ramifications in the ...
Chance Watters rifles home. Plymouth's win at Accrington means Moore's men drop down to second tonight but with two games in hand still. Wednesday are defending a 23-game unbeaten run in [League One](https://www.examinerlive.co.uk/all-about/efl-league-one) whilst this evening's hosts have not lost any of their last 11 outings. [The Owls](https://www.examinerlive.co.uk/all-about/sheffield-wednesday-fc) make the short trip across South Yorkshire to face Michael Duff's side with both teams in superb form.
It's taken five and a half months, but Sheffield Wednesday were beaten 4-2 on Tuesday night – despite staging a dramatic fightback against Barnsley.
There were only 12 minutes on the clock, and Wednesday were in trouble. Liam Kitching finished the job in the 96th minute to put it to bed on the break. With wayward passes and loose touches, Wednesday just couldn’t get a grip on the game. It took a set piece for Wednesday to go closest, but Dominic Iorfa headed over Barry Bannan’s excellent cross from close range. The last game between these two was won because of a high press and constant pressure – Michael Duff’s side forced them into mistakes last time, and it happened again. Wednesday didn’t look comfortable from the off.
Sometimes you build games up so much in your mind, they end up letting you down. Sometimes they do not.
When Gregory netted his second, a home win looked comfortably the least likely result but that was exactly what happened. His strike found the net too. Both have two games in hand and if Tuesday was anything to go by, are absolutely ravenous for promotion. Both sides played with all the cussed bloody-mindeness you expect of a White Rose derby. The Owls kicked off and as soon as they got the ball to Barry Bannan he launched a long pass Kitching simply leapt up and headed away. But their team did not make it to the top of League One by accident, and two tap-ins every bit as good as 30-yarders from Lee Gregory got them back on terms and in pole position to win with 15 minutes left.

It was 2-2 when Barry Bannan's ball over the top found Marvin Johnson on the left and his low cross was finished by Gregory - who completed his brace - from close range after 74 minutes. Wednesday reduced the arrears when a long ball from Will Vaulks found Michael Smith on the right and he sent over a low cross which was turned into the net from close range by Lee Gregory just after the half-hour mark. The game burst into life in the 10th minute when Mads Andersen slipped the ball through to Devante Cole on the left-hand side of the area and the striker beat goalkeeper Cameron Dawson with a low, angled shot.
The home side went 2-0 up early on following goals from Devante Cole and James Norwood.
“To not get something out of the game is disappointing. “To give them the first two goals in the manner that we gave them was really disappointing. That’s uncharacteristic of us in terms of the goals because we’ve been mean defensively. Sheffield Wednesday wanted to play and pass and we managed to keep pinching it. “They were on the back foot, we got the second goal and we were looking to win the game. The home side went 2-0 up early on following goals from Devante Cole and James Norwood.

"They had a lot of oo-ah moments but there's lots and lots of positives for us. They (Wednesday) were asking lots and lots of questions. “They stopped trying to play through us and just kept putting it in our box, which is tough because they've got some good players and some big lads. “I'm pretty certain they'll respond the right way. “We’ve made five subs a lot and getting injuries back, recruiting well in terms of adding numbers.”
Darren Moore has made a quartet of changes for tonight's South Yorkshire derby at Oakwell with top scorer Windass missing out through injury.

Darren Moore has confirmed he doesn't know the full extent of injuries to George Byers and Josh Windass.
The Scotsman had proven himself to be a real threat from midfield, scoring six goals and registering three assists in 24 games, but keeping him fit has been a problem. The Owls saw their club-record unbeaten run come to an end on Tuesday night as they were beaten by promotion rivals Barnsley 4-2 at Oakwell. Wednesday travel to take on the bottom side in the league on Sunday, and they will be confident of getting a result despite the injury issues, as the hosts are 13 points from safety, and it seems inevitable that they will be playing in the fourth tier next season.

I like the manager and the group of players they have got there are strong and there is a great togetherness there. It is a massive football club." I thought he was outstanding and didn't deserve to be on the losing team. "I think they need [Josh] Windass back. They have been on a great run. They have got some outstanding footballers. Late goals from Max Watters and Liam Kitching condemned [Wednesday](https://www.examinerlive.co.uk/all-about/sheffield-wednesday-fc) to a first league loss since early October. They can now go on another great run. If Flint scores, it's a different game. I do think they missed his creativity in the final third but they have got players who can score goals and they have got one of the best players in the league in Barry Bannan. "I didn't want to risk him tonight, such as have him on the bench and potentially risk him. But there was a potentially positive update issued on forward Mallik Wilks. Whilst Michael Ihiekwe and Ben Heneghan remain long-term absentees, manager Darren Moore is still awaiting further news on influential duo George Byers and Josh Windass who are struggling with muscular and ankle injuries respectively.
Sheffield Wednesday fans could soon see Mallik Wilks back out on the pitch as he nears a return from injury – while Callum Paterson is also getting closer.
In the run of games we’ve got we want to bodies back, and he’ll be a welcome addition. “If he keeps continuing what he’s doing - he’s just building up volume in training - then he’s looking good. Thankfully, though Reece James and Lee Gregory are both fine after they were forced off last week.
