Race Across the World: the hit BBC reality show with life lessons for ... (Telegraph.co.uk)

The BBC adventure show that became a national talking-point during lockdown is back. But it's not really about the race.

“When people come up to you in the street and go, ‘I’d love to do that show’ – which people say about Race Across the World and The Traitors – I think that’s a really good sign that you’re onto something,” says Harcourt. One of the couples in the new series is Ladi and Monique Ajayi, a father and daughter from Essex. Race Across the World will also return, and a celebrity version could be in the offing. And this is the very essence of the show. Facing bears and vast tracts of Canadian wilderness in real life is very different from facing them through a TV screen. When I ask him why the Dutch are so good at reality TV – they invented The Traitors, The Voice and Big Brother – he says that creators in Holland are incentivised because, as in the UK, a show’s rights don’t solely sit with the broadcasters, meaning that production companies benefit when a programme is a hit. We see the bickering and the bartering but also the bonding that comes with weeks of living out of backpacks in challenging circumstances. Race Across the World heralds a kinder, less vain, more human side of reality TV – it’s TV that is unglamorous and extemporised but warm. Tim Harcourt, the show’s executive producer who came up with the format (he also devised Gogglebox), tells me that Race Across the World resonates with viewers because it’s actually about two journeys: the physical journey, but also the “interior, emotional journey for the people involved – nothing tests a relationship dynamic more than being together and enjoying the highs and lows”. The first series, which saw contestants race by land and sea from London to Singapore, aired in 2019 and won a Bafta. The second series saw couples race from Mexico City to Ushuaia in Argentina, the world’s most southerly city. [BBC programme](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/tv/0/race-across-world-finale-review-tension-breakdowns-locusts-breakfast/), which returns for its third series tonight, is as follows: five pairs of ordinary Brits race each other across thousands of miles with no phones and no luxuries for a cash prize.

Ladi also added the heartfelt reason he decided to take part in the show: "I think for me, the motivation for doing this show is that I'm going to spend quality time with my daughter that I will probably never ever get again. Race Across The World series 3: Who is in the cast? (Metro)

The new series of the BBC show will see teams travel across Canada without smartphones, internet access or credit cards.

‘This is just one of those opportunities that doesn’t come around very often. You never think it will happen to you.’ [Race Across The World cast endure ‘genuinely scary’ bear encounters in series 3](https://metro.co.uk/2023/03/14/race-across-the-world-series-3-contestants-face-scary-bear-incident-18435390/?ico=more_text_links) Psychiatrist Zainib said: ‘We have always spoken about wanting to get a sense of adventure, wanting to go out there and do something that’s out of the ordinary, but then we very gradually and sort of almost insidiously slipped into this life of nine to five, working and then coming home and that sense of adventure was completely gone. She said she prefers ‘holidays’ and has ‘never owned a backpack’, but signed up for the series to ‘challenge myself to be able to experience countries in a way that I probably never would.’ Married couple Mobeen, 31, and Zainib, 32, from Manchester, joked that they ‘live like we are in our 80s’ and want the show to break up the cycle of ‘working and watching TV.’ Michael said the main motivation behind joining Race Across The World is to ‘build a better relationship’ with his sibling. Ladi said the trip would be ‘probably the last time ever that we’re going to be like this’, noting that Monique is ‘entering into her own adulthood in a way.’ [Race Across The World](https://metro.co.uk/tag/race-across-the-world/) is coming back with a bang, with the new series of the BBC hit seeing a cast of budding explorers attempt to travel across Canada. Race Across the World contestant Tricia: 'My nerves over sight loss' (Metro)

Speaking to Metro.co.uk, Tricia revealed how she battled nerves throughout the experience but thankfully hand best friend on hand to give her a 'verbal slap' ...

‘Zainib, I felt the same way as Trish, I was quite scared of Zainib at first until I got to know her and she was absolutely lovely. When we met everyone else they were full of beans but they seemed to have a bit of an edge. ‘I thought all of them would be strong,’ said Cathie. ‘I thought Mobeen and Zainib were going to be our strongest competition,’ added Tricia. ‘It’s human nature when you know you’re going to be competing with someone. “Do you think they’re going to be clever?” But I also had a thing about Claudia and Kevin as well.’ ‘When I’m walking around I’m normally holding on to Cathie and she’ll just point. We were making up our own theories as we went along!’ ‘I didn’t have the belief in myself I could do anything else. Tricia, 48, lives with chromoretenopothy uveitis, a rare conidiation which brings on sight loss and often overwhelming anxiety. You’ve certainly got a lot more belief in yourself,’ agreed Cathie.

Race Across The World season 3: Meet the cast taking part (cosmopolitan.com)

This is everything you need to know about the cast of Race Across The World season 3 which starts on BBC One tonight.

Marc: "I think it's easy saying that we're going to be tight on money and we're going to come up with all the right ideas, it's easier said than done. Monique: "So, I stumbled across the series and said to Dad that I reckon we can do this and it sort of just happened. Apparently, that's not the right means of survival whereas Dad's gone for the bar of soap that's got to last." It’s something we want to do together, but we've also got our own individual reasons. I wouldn't want to do it with anybody but Cathie because she's the tonic to my gin." Claudia: "I am looking for some adventure, a reason to explore and develop our relationship. Just being present and seeing what's right, deciding between the two of us." I also want to get it out there that people that have got sight loss can still do whatever they want to do, obviously, apart from driving. Not necessarily always going for the most expensive, fastest option." But for me, it's to prove to myself that with my sight loss I can still do stuff and that I'm not sight loss Tricia, I'm Tricia with sight loss – because a lot of people do label you. This time the contestants are trying to get across the vast country of Canada. They have no access to their phones and can't travel by plane, instead they are given a GPS tracking device, a map, a money belt and a travel guide with local job adverts to help them get reach various check points.

BBC Race Across the World contestants: Who is taking part in the ... (WalesOnline)

Best friends Cathie, 49, and Tricia, 48, are flying the flag for Wales and Devon respectively. The pair are long-time best friends. Most Read. 1.

Zainib said of wanting to take part: “I think there's personal reasons, individually, and there's a collective reason for both of us. I think the both of us have always spoken about wanting to get a sense of adventure, wanting to go out there and do something that's out of the ordinary, but then we very gradually and sort of almost insidiously slipped into this life of nine to five, working and then coming home and that sense of adventure was completely gone. As to what handy tips he picked up, Michael said: “I guess it totally depends on where we are, where we're going and what each checkpoint is going to be. Much like several of the other contestants, Marc and Michael wanted to do the show to do something as brothers. I'm at a stage where I'm ready to settle down, but I also want to travel.” As to why she wanted to do the show, Claudia said: “I am looking for some adventure, a reason to explore and develop our relationship. Monique said her reasoning for wanting to go on the show was because of her love of travelling. As time has gone on and we've gotten further and further into the process, it's become much more about me having a break from being something to everybody, and just having some time to be selfish and do what I want to do. It all got a bit calm so when you start seeing a programme like Race Across the World, you think, ‘Oh, my God, this is exactly what we need.’ But at the time, it's an application form you fill out and you think there’s maybe 14 million to 1 odds. Trying to stay on the move, not getting stagnant working in one place, enjoy being in the moment and holding money back for the last leg if we get there.” I think people are inherently nice and want to help you, particularly in Canada.” I also want to get it out there that people that have got sight loss can still do whatever they want to do, obviously, apart from driving.”

Race Across the World series three review – one of the greatest ... (The Guardian)

A gameshow, travel show and reality show all in one, this series is a messy celebration of human foibles, resilience, diversity and generosity.

Tricia is louder and taller and needs Cathie to keep her grounded; Cathie needs Tricia to go up to customers at petrol stations and beg for a lift. This gives the show a chance to show off one of its many hidden strengths: the ability to find helpful civilians who can be stars for five minutes. For those unfamiliar with the area, the surprise is the mode of travel the participants have to master. Even those travelling up the only main road on Vancouver Island, to get from one ferry terminal to another – and hurry, because the ferry only goes three times a week! There’s the game itself, where we the viewers at home confidently identify mistakes we definitely wouldn’t have made and better options we certainly would have thought of under pressure. Partly a nod to Jules Verne but mainly inspired by the urgent need for humankind to stop flying, Race Across the World sets a simple challenge.

Back for its third series, this nail-biting series sees contestants race across Canada with limited cash and no phone.

[This year’s journey is across Canada](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/tv/0/race-across-world-hit-bbc-series-relies-kindness-strangers), from Vancouver on the edge of the Pacific Ocean to St John’s in Newfoundland, on the Atlantic coast. But the show also mixes in some travel experiences, which sit awkwardly with the purpose of the show because if you’re racing to get somewhere, should you really be making a detour to see some bears, however good bears might be? Race Across the World (BBC One) is a reality show in which, refreshingly, the contestants are in it for the adventure rather than 15 minutes of fame.

The 2023 series of BBC's Race Across the World is officially here with new locations and a fresh batch of contestants - but who narrates the series?

BBC Race Across the World kicks off on Wednesday, March 22 at 9pm. And while many will be familiar with the Race Across the World plot, others might be wondering who is voicing the series. John Hannah will once again return to narrate Race Against the World on BBC. John's on the island of Newfoundland, the most easterly town in North America. Neuman in the opening scenes. Series three of the popular programme starts on Wednesday, March 22, at 9pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.

They were beaten to first place on the shoe by just 20 seconds after a dramatic foot race to the final checkpoint at the summit of Cerro Alarkén. They finished in third place, trying to negotiate their way from Mendoza to Ushuaia, running out of money for a taxi for the final leg, meaning they were forced to hitch-hike. Siblings Dom, a teaching assistant, and Lizzie, a chalet host made it all the way to reaching the very end of Race Across The World. Mother and son Jo, a physiotherapist, and Sam, a landscape gardener, made it all the way to the seventh leg of the challenge. The race’s final destination is St John’s in Newfoundland, one of the most easterly cities in North America and around 7,000km (4,350 miles) from Vancouver. Claudia and Kevin had more of a matey relationship, which would soon turn hostile when faced with the challenge of having to ask strangers for a ride in their cars. And while the series does take time to extol the stunning beauty of Canada (killer whale and bear sightings had me looking up flights within 10 minutes), we’ve already got enough of them. Not one team made it through this opening episode without a spat – a sure sign that the casting is spot on. Ladi admitted that he had given his daughter “a princess lifestyle” and that he was now keen to help her toughen up and learn to fend for herself. Which is why I was apprehensive about this year’s series, which sends pairs of travellers across the breadth of Canada with no phones or bank cards and a ban on air travel.
