Soccer AM was not just laddish banter – it changed my life and gave ... (The Guardian)

We should have ditched the Soccerettes earlier but the show was huge anarchic fun, from sword fighting with Leboeuf to Ginola's swearing frenzy.

A lot of people behind the scenes have been there for years and years, it’s a huge part of their lives. From Tim Lovejoy at the start all the way through to whoever counts down to the final second of the final show. And there was always some football to show a minute later – the best goals, the showboat, the third eye. Perhaps had I been more experienced, or stronger willed, I would have campaigned to lose it sooner, but I didn’t; 2010 simultaneously wasn’t that long ago, but feels like a completely different time – that’s the excuse everyone uses right? Once someone shouted: “You’ll never be Lovejoy you mug” when I was wandering down the road minding my own business, and Twitter lights up now and again telling me I ruined it all. The week that Richard Keys and Andy Gray went we were expressly told not to mention it. You would pop into the green room to see Kevin Hart in conversation with Bananarama while Wagner from X Factor and Brett Ormerod were having a cup of tea. But very slowly I vaguely learned what I was doing – I was lucky to be next to a brilliant broadcaster in Helen Chamberlain. The show had an energy and a soul. [Sky is dropping Soccer AM](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2023/mar/22/time-runs-out-for-soccer-am-as-sky-sports-pulls-plug-on-programme) at the end of this season but it has taken me on a nostalgic journey thinking about the good times. It was charming and silly and kind of hazily endless – no matter what you did on a Saturday morning, it would still be on when you got in. My first vivid memory of Soccer AM was in a hungover stupor sprawled across a sofa at a mate’s student house in Birmingham in the late 90s.

Scores of viewers - no doubt a good few Hearts supporters among them - phoned, wrote in and emailed to express their disgust at the show booking on a group of genuine football casuals. It was enough for Lovejoy and the Soccer AM team to acquiesce. There were dozens of empty bottles and cans on the hotel's beautifully-maintained lawns and flower beds." "As it was Bobby's idea, we got him to phone Sky and put our case. CCS!" When the cameras started rolling, the seven men burst into chants of "CCS! Still heavily-intoxicated from the night before, the Edinburgh soccer casuals rocked up that following morning at the Soccer AM studios where they were about to embark on a live telly event reminiscent of the Sex Pistols on the Bill Grundy show. In the book Blance writes: "Bobby Lipscomb's suggestion for a group of us to apply on Sky Television's Saturday morning football show Soccer AM was a stroke of genius. Clearly none of this was on the mind of Soccer AM showrunners when they accepted a request from seven CCS members, including Bobby Lipscomb, Andy Blance and Derek Dykes to appear on the show. It read, “interesting fact: Her finishing move is called the Kelly Killer and it involves ‘putting the other girl's head under my legs and pounding her face again and again’. Kamara and Rocket also had plenty more to say on her. The American, whose real name is Barbie Blank (yes, really), is normally more accustomed to throwing opponents across the ring. It’s safe to say, she made quite the impression.
