NEU to consult members on pay offer (NEU)

This is an insulting offer from a Government which simply does not value teachers. After days of intensive negotiation, the education unions ASCL, NAHT, NASUWT ...

Between 2 in 5 (42%) and 3 in 5 (58%) of schools would have to make cuts next year to afford the pay increase. The Government have said they are only prepared to fund 0.5% of the teachers’ pay offer which averages at 4.5%. The Government claims this is fully funded but NEU analysis suggests that between 2 in 5 (42%) and 3 in 5 (58%) of schools would have to make cuts next year to afford it. To sit by and allow so many talented teachers to leave for reasons which are entirely fixable, should be a point of shame for this Government. “It is now crystal clear that we have an Education Secretary and a Government that is ignoring the crisis in our schools and colleges. Investing in the education of this generation of children and young people, those hit so hard by Covid, is essential to economic recovery.

Reject 'insulting' pay offer, NEU urges members (TES News)

The DfE has offered teachers a £1000 one-off payment for 2022-23 and a 4.5 per cent average pay rise next year.

The government rejected this. The ballot opens today and closes on Sunday 2 April. It says the government believes schools will be able to accommodate the 4 per cent increase in teacher pay for 2023-24 and that just the 0.5 per cent will be covered by extra funding. The government says the latest pay deal equates to a pay rise of at least £1,880 (4.3 per cent) for experienced teachers and £2,000 for new teachers outside of London in 2023-24. [DfE recommended a pay rise of 3 per cent](https://www.tes.com/magazine/news/general/teacher-pay-talks-dfe-makes-offer-unions) for experienced teachers in 2023-24 in its evidence to the School Teachers’ Review Body (STRB). But the NEU has this evening urged its members to reject the pay offer from the government to show the DfE that members “will no longer put up with their treatment of the profession”.

Prospect of more teachers' strikes in England as union 'insulted' by ... (The Guardian)

National Education Union to recommend members reject offer of 4.3% rise and £1000 one-off payment.

“The government has put forward a fair and reasonable offer, backed with funding for schools. NEU analysis shows that between two in five (42%) and three in five (58%) of schools would have to make cuts to afford staff pay rises. The ballot opens on Monday and closes on Sunday 2 April. We will be making no further comment this evening but will issue a further statement tomorrow.” “NAHT’s national executive committee will be considering the details of this offer this evening. “By refusing to address the legitimate and reasonable request to bring to an end more than a decade of below-inflation unfunded teacher pay increases, the government is driving teaching and recruitment retention in schools in England to breaking point.”

The National Education Union has said it will recommend members reject what it called an “insulting” pay offer from the Government.

To sit by and allow so many talented teachers to leave for reasons which are entirely fixable should be a point of shame for this Government. Investing in the education of this generation of children and young people, those hit so hard by Covid, is essential to economic recovery. They will then decide on our next steps.” “This offer is less than teachers in Scotland and Wales have been offered. Staffing and services will be squeezed in order to comply. The Government seems content for this to continue.

Teachers' strikes: NEU urges teachers to reject new pay deal (BBC News)

Schools in England could face further strike action as the National Education Union has asked teachers to reject a new pay offer, after intensive talks.

But Wales' school leaders' union, NAHT Cymru, has rejected the offer and says funding arrangements remain a major concern for school leaders. Teachers in Scotland have accepted a 7% rise for 2022/23, which will be backdated to April. The union says this is a real-terms pay cut which will leave many teachers still struggling to make ends meet. But if this happens, the £1,000 cash payment for this year would not happen. The result of that will be announced at the NEU conference on 3 April. "The offer provides an average 4.5% pay rise for next year, puts £1,000 into the pockets of teachers as a one-off payment for this year, and commits to reducing workload by five hours each week.
