The Duke, Sir Elton John, and Sadie Frost have turned up to the High Court where they are suing over allegations of unlawful newsgathering dating back to ...

The Daily Mail and its linked titles has consistently denied unlawful activity by its staff since the phone hacking scandal broke more than a decade ago. A spokesperson for ANL also said the allegations were “unsubstantiated and highly defamatory claims, based on no credible evidence”. “The claimants each claim that in different ways they were the victim of numerous unlawful acts carried out by the defendant, or by those acting on the instructions of its newspapers, The Daily Mail and The Mail On Sunday”, said Mr Sherborne. Lawyers for ANL point out Prince Harry, according to his memoir Spare, had a “keen interest in the prosecution of journalists from the News of the World”, and had said he was “overjoyed” when News International chief executive Rebekah Brooks was arrested. In her submissions to the court, Baroness Lawrence says she “became deeply paranoid by the strange things happening around her, and by the unexplained disclosure of her private information as well as information relating to Stephen’s murder investigation in the Daily Mail”. In written legal submissions, it is revealed Harry says he suffered “suspicion and paranoia…caused by Associated’s publication of the unlawful articles - friends were lost or cut off as a result and everyone became a ‘suspect’, since he was misled by the way that the articles were written into believing that those close to him were the source of this information being provided to Associated’s newspapers.”

The newspaper publisher – which denies all wrongdoing – insists that material was handed over to assist the inquiry, and is subject to strict restrictions on how it can be otherwise used. Harry says he was “shocked and appalled” to learn of unlawful activities at ANL, adding that he is “concerned and upset by the fact that despite its stated values of representing the interests of British people, characterising itself as a beacon of truth and integrity, in fact it was committing these insidious and illegal Acts, and even lying and continuing to cover up the same so that they would not be publicly exposed.” In his statement of claim, Harry says Mulcaire – through former News of the World executive Greg Miskiw – provided “unlawfully or illegally obtained information” and offered a “menu of illegal services” to an employee of the Mail on Sunday. “Mr Mulcaire and Mr Miskiw targeted a number of individuals who they knew were of considerable interest and value to the Mail on Sunday, routinely monitoring and carrying out unlawful acts in relation to them for potential stories.

Duke of Sussex and other high-profile claimants, including Doreen Lawrence, are making allegations of illegal behaviour by Associated Newspapers.

Second, Associated Newspapers argues that Harry and the other individuals have waited too long to bring the claims. First, it alleges that the claims are largely based on material that was provided in confidence to the Leveson inquiry back in 2011. He went on: "There was never any centralised discussion between us about who had brought claims as each office in the Institution is siloed. "He had a former military and British Telecom phone man on his payroll fulltime, who engineered the weekly landline taps on his victims. This man would use cassette recorders and insert them into the landline cables of the green BT junction box cabinets on the street. It hurts me to know that I was played for a fool."
