'One of Scotland's greatest in any age & any sport' (BBC News)

Ken Buchanan was of Leith and Edinburgh but he was one of the most accomplished fighters the cruellest sport has ever known, writes Tom English.

"I've had my life and I've had a good kick of the ball," he said. He had money and he was too trusting with people and he lost it. "I was top of the bill, I was world champion and Ali wasn't world champion at that stage. He had other big days after that Duran fight in 1972 - Watt a year later was an epic - but the troubled times started to mount in his life outside the ring. His marriage broke down, his house was sold, the hotel that he owned went, too. On plenty of occasions, Duran said that Buchanan was the best he ever faced. "The Edinburgh people have always been fantastic to me, but the people who ran Edinburgh just weren't aware of boxing," he said. In the two years between autumn of 1970 and autumn of 1972, Buchanan fought at The Garden five times. Laguna was the champion and he thought I'd go down the Swanee dead easy with the heat and everything. "They'd start arguing with me and it was a left jab I gave them - and that was it. "The first time I was at Madison Square Garden was when Ali fought Oscar Bonavena and I fought Paduano," he said. He was never wowed by any of those guys because he was one of those guys.

Remembering Ken Buchanan, a British boxing icon up there with the ... (ESPN.co.uk)

Ken Buchanan, who died on Saturday aged 77, will be remembered as one of the best fighters in British history.

It was the only fight out of five appearances he lost at MSG. Buchanan, who finished his career with a 61-8 record, added the WBC crown the following year with victory over Ruben Navarro but after two successful world title defences (he beat Laguna in a rematch on a unanimous decision), Buchanan's reign ended in controversy and agony against Duran. The pale-skinned Scotsman fried like an egg in the scorching Puerto Rican sun on his way to a split points win over local hero Ismael Laguna to lift the WBA world lightweight title. Duran took the WBA world lightweight title, and so began his brilliant career at the top level. Amid an exchange of punches at the end of the 13th round, Duran punched Buchanan in the testicles. Roberto Duran was a young (recently turned 21), dangerous streetfighter when he first fought for a world title against the slick boxing skills of Buchanan on June 26, 1972.

Ken Buchanan obituary (The Guardian)

Scottish boxing great who became the world lightweight champion in 1970.

For the year before his death, dementia meant he was living in a care home. Ali had arrived only to find he had not been allocated a changing room, and his trainer went to Buchanan’s to ask if Ali could share with him. He recalled being taken to the cinema to watch The Brown Bomber, about the life of the world heavyweight champion Joe Louis. When he fought Laguna in a 1971 title rematch, tissue around Buchanan’s eye was so badly swollen that his vision was being affected. A similar gruesome scenario was enacted in the first of the Rocky films when Sylvester Stallone instructs his trainer to cut his eye open in his heavyweight title fight against Apollo Creed. A nimble and technically gifted fighter, he became world lightweight champion in 1970 and had sufficient global recognition to have topped the bill on several occasions at the New York boxing venue Madison Square Garden.
