Mercer’s disciplinary hearing this week will be one to monitor, as Montpellier wait to see when he will return while trying to push for the Top 14 play-offs. It was about the only thing that did not go the way of Simmonds in a player-of-the-match performance in this last-16 tie. Then he was left muttering in frustration, having been sent off for making contact with the head of Christ Tshiunza with an upright tackle.
Exeter reach the Champions Cup quarter-finals after scoring more tries than 14-man Montpellier in a thriller that finishes 33-33 after extra time.
None of that is positive for the game." It's not good for the game. But the Montpellier fly-half made amends with a 45-metre penalty that took the game into extra time. On Mercer's sending off after numerous video replays, Baxter added: "I just don't like the whole process. "We really looked like a team that wanted to win and wanted to work hard. Exeter rugby director Rob Baxter said: "I am really pleased for the players.
Seven days ago, Rob Baxter did not hide his fury as his Exeter Chiefs side crashed to a lacklustre loss at Westcountry rivals Bath Rugby. Present day, it was ...
Montpellier, though, refused to go quietly and as with their European existence very much int the balance, Saint-Andre’s side threw caution to the wind. As he trudged off, his team-mates did their best to fill the void he had vacated. He made his way to halfway only to concede a penalty. Thankfully, there was cover in behind the England centre to prevent a penalty try, but his indiscretion did allow Garbisi to restore his side’s lead at the turn. To a man - and roared on by a vociferous home crowd - the Chiefs rolled the dice with one final show of defiance. Initial warnings were seen off by the Frenchmen, but when the hosts pushed again midway through the half through big carries from Dafydd Jenkins, Dan Frost and Kirsten, it was Aussie prop Sio who took charge of the ball close to the line, driving his way over for his maiden European score. Again, numerous replays of the incident were shown on the big screens, each of them getting a more audible reaction with every replay. Just six minutes had elapsed when Elliott Stooke sent Mercer over in the corner for a third Montpellier score. Up and running at last, the Chiefs were given a further boost not long after when Montpellier’s dangerous Fijian, Masivesi Dakuwaqa, was yellow-carded for killing a maul just metres from his own line. After some tough talking in the wake of last weekend’s Premiership defeat to Bath, Baxter was true to his word in making changes to the starting line-up. His touchdown, crucially converted by Joe Simmonds, ensured the Chiefs advanced to the quarter-finals on a try count back. Undeterred, they came again and with three minutes remaining, replacement Lenni Nouchi set up a grandstand finale as he raced over in the left corner.

They win the advange and Exeter seemed to switch off for a second and Thomas Darmon dots down. Determined close-range pick-and-gos and it is the prop who barges his way over. They go to the TMO...no try. They get the try this time! A rolling maul travels 20m and it looks like they are over - but held up!! Do they have the range? A Montpellier try would totally kill this - but Exeter cling on! You have to feel for the visitors. You can't help but feel Montpellier would have won that with a full complement of players for the full 80 but that's the game. That’s my job and that of the coaches to try and knock us back into alignment and not get frustrated with one another. The one thing that was really evident and all the discussions I’ve had with the group or individually, there was a frustration with each other and how we were playing that is causing more of the problems than is helping. For me, personally, I’m really looking forward to the game.

Rob Baxter hailed his never-say-die Chiefs after hooker Jack Yeandle's dramatic extra time try helped set up a mouth-watering European quarter-final clash ...
Chiefs finally found their feet and momentum in the Spring sunshine with prop Scott Sio using his bulk to cross for their first try from close range. Replacement Lenni Nouchi surged over for a try and then Garbisi kicked a long range penalty with time running down to level matters. They found themselves 14-0 behind against a lively Montepellier side who celebrated two early tries and were all over the hosts like a rash. But we were always in this fight and came out on top in the end. We've had a few roller-coasters like that over the years and won a few games at the end here as well. They grew and grew and seemed to have two extra men at times!

Meafou got the first in the 51st minute as Toulouse cashed in on a penalty with some quick movement, and Bulls had little opportunity to recover before Lebel got the second, set up by Antoine Dupont off a scrum. Toulouse turned on the style in the second half to beat the Bulls and reach the quarter-finals of the European Cup. Fly-half Paolo Garbisi levelled the game at 26-26 through a long-range penalty with the final kick of normal time, then Montpellier replacement Louis Carbonel touched down midway through the second period in extra-time, and Garbisi converted, but Yeandle and Simmonds had the final say. I thought they were magnificent and as a club we need to grow that relationship and that support between the players and the supporters. It’s like anything, if you put in a blood and guts performance like that, then the supporters will back you no matter what. Helping to lead the way for the Chiefs was No.8 Sam Simmonds who, ironically, will next season be pulling on the Montpellier jersey. Personally, I’m really pleased for the players because we have challenged them a few times this season around the highs and the lows of performances. “As I’ve said before, whether we win or lose, that doesn’t matter too much, it’s the level of performance across the game which is most important to me. We were quite rightly criticised after our away performances against Bath and Harlequins, whereas today we controlled what we wanted to do very well.”
Joe Hawkins says he's 'excited' about being part of a new journey at Exeter Chiefs after today confirming his switch to the Gallagher Premiership giants from ...
“You can see he’s clearly talented and that he has a bit of versatility about him as well having covered both centre and fly-half for Wales during the Six Nations. Joe, I think, ticks pretty much every box that we look for in a player and I’ve no doubt he’s going to be a great addition to the squad. “Also, chatting with Rob and Ali [Hepher], I liked what they had to say about how they want to play and how they want to create a new team capable of challenging at the very top. “Obviously, we’re delighted to have Joe signed on for next season and beyond,” said the Chiefs Director of Rugby. “I know a few of the boys already, which will definitely help the settling in process,” added Hawkins. “It’s a new challenge for me and something a bit different, especially moving away from my home region, who I will always be thankful to for giving me the playing opportunities that I've had up until now.

I have made some great friends here and would like to wish the players and staff all the best for the future.” It's a lot of talk and I have no idea where it's started.” He is a player that we have spent a lot of time developing over the last two years. "I've watched and looked at Joe many times,” he said. It is a blow for Welsh rugby amid the cutbacks and financial constraints that are taking place. He leaves the Llandarcy-based team with 28 appearances for them on the board.
