Russia's second city of St Petersburg was hit by an explosion in a cafe that killed a well-known ultra-nationalist war correspondent, fighter and propagandist.

“Zelensky is personally responsible for this attack, being the public leader of the terrorist regime. The attack was professionally prepared,” said Sergei Markov, a former adviser to the Kremlin and a political commentator. Within an hour of the attack influential Russian commentators were blaming Ukraine and threatening revenge. In the video he said: “We will defeat everybody, we will kill everybody, we will rob everybody and everything will be as we want it to be.” Quoting Russian police sources, the Baza media account said that the bomb had been hidden in the statue to avoid being smelt by sniffer dogs at the door of the cafe and was detonated by remote control. Within an hour of the bombing influential Russian commentators were blaming Ukraine and threatening revenge.

Correspondent killed and several more injuries reported in mystery blast in Russia's second city.

No individual or group has taken responsibility for the blast. Many of Tatarsky’s social media posts were critical of Russia’s military leadership and approach to the invasion of Ukraine. He was among hundreds of attendees at a lavish Kremlin ceremony last September to proclaim Russia’s annexation of four partly occupied regions of Ukraine, a move that most countries at the UN condemned as illegal. He was also a militant nationalist whose views on the war were summed up in a comment he gave at a Kremlin reception: “We’ll conquer everyone, we’ll kill everyone, we’ll loot whoever we need to, and everything will be just as we like it.” The blast reportedly occurred just minutes after the blogger was handed a statue as he addressed a group of people in the cafe. The group, which refers to itself as “Russia’s information troops” on the messaging app said: “There was a terrorist attack.

Influential supporter of war in Ukraine had criticised military leadership and called for generals to be prosecuted.

The event at which he was speaking was publicised and the woman accused of bringing the bomb to the event was even reported to have joked with him about whether or not she was carrying an explosive device hidden inside a bust of a soldier. Most importantly, he was a classic soft target – someone who was a visible face of the war and yet lacked the protection of a government official or army personnel. “I don’t think that a massive reaction from the government will follow: as experience shows, the Kremlin will try to make these situations routine.” And he had aligned with other critics of the military leadership, such as “We’ll defeat everyone, we’ll kill everyone, we’ll loot whoever we need to, and everything will be just as we like it,” he said last year on camera after a Kremlin ceremony confirming the “annexation” of four Ukrainian regions. After the war began, he claimed to have joined a volunteer battalion and fought in Mariupol.
