Portsmouth's Great South Run has been cancelled due to Storm Ashley's high winds and rain. Find out how this storm is ruining more than just running plans!

Portsmouth's much-anticipated Great South Run 2024 has been called off this year, and it’s all thanks to Storm Ashley bringing a barrage of winds that would give a hurricane a run for its money! The event, which typically sees thousands of enthusiastic runners pounding the pavement and conquering the scenic 10-mile route, faced unfortunate weather conditions that made it impossible to proceed safely. Organisers hastily announced the cancellation, citing a grim forecast of high winds and heavy rain that left them with no choice but to pull the plug on what was sure to be a thrilling day for both participants and spectators alike.

As Storm Ashley loomed over Portsmouth, weather alerts were in full swing. Reports of strong gusts could put even the hardiest of runners off their stride. A warning was issued to all would-be participants and cheering family members alike to layer up and prepare for the impending storm. Given the predicted heavy downpours and relentless winds, it was definitely a day for building cosy forts inside rather than racing against the clock outside!

With safety at the forefront, organisers decided that there was no way they could allow spectators to gather and runners to take the start line with conditions that could jeopardise their well-being. A decision to prioritise safety over tradition was made easier by the forecast revealing not just high winds, but also debris floating around due to potential flooding at high tide levels. So, while many had hoped for personal bests and glory, they were swiftly met with the reality that sometimes Mother Nature has different plans.

As the storm wreaks havoc across the coast, Portsmouth isn’t the only area feeling the effects of Storm Ashley. Schools and public transport have also been affected, making it a rather soggy weekend in the South. For those runners desperately seeking their fix, perhaps it’s a good time to dust off the running shoes indoors or invest in those snazzy windbreakers!

Factoid alert! Did you know that the Great South Run is one of the largest road races in the UK? Each year, participants raise thousands for charities, showcasing the spirit of community and camaraderie (when the weather allows!). And speaking of storms, Storm Ashley is just a reminder of nature’s unpredictable ways, proving that even the best-laid plans can be swept away – literally!
