Kraven the Hunter: A Howling Missed Opportunity in the Spider-Verse!

Russell Crowe and Aaron Taylor-Johnson in Kraven the Hunter? Not quite the entertainment we were hoping for!

Kraven the Hunter has landed in cinemas, and critics are chomping at the bit to dissect this latest addition to the Spider-Man Universe. Directed by JC Chandor, the film features Aaron Taylor-Johnson as the eponymous Kraven, a character most clearly more suited for the comic pages than the big screen. He’s presented as a feral figure, somewhat reminiscent of Tarzan wearing a fang necklace — because who wouldn’t want to see a superhero with a washboard belly and a glower taking over the city, right? His portrayal has left many wondering if it’s a celebration or simply a parody of the superhero genre.

While plenty of criticism has been thrown at the film, Russell Crowe's role as Kraven's father has emerged as a notable highlight — though perhaps not heaps of praise would drown out the waves of scorn the film has received. Many reviewers have remarked on the strained and muddled story that leaves audiences guessing as to what precisely they're watching and whether they should even be taking it seriously. It feels as if Kraven decided it could borrow notes from various superhero stories but forgot to add an original twist of its own, leading to a movie experience that comes across more as a fever dream than an engaging narrative.

With a Rotten Tomatoes score dipping below 20%, it’s no surprise that early screenings have become a bit of a laugh fest for cinephiles eager to see how low the bar can go for this adaptation. From Aaron Taylor-Johnson's questionable style choices to Crowe donning a rather dainty scarf while delivering heavy paternal advice, it all falls into a clumsily delightful chaos that’s neither here nor there. Some have gone as far as saying that this particular chapter has put an end to Sony's Spider-Verse ambitions — craven indeed!

Despite its flaws, Kraven the Hunter does offer some intriguing reflections on toxic masculinity wrapped up in superhuman antics… if you can endure the less-than-stellar execution. The movie grapples with Kraven’s complex relationship with his father over the backdrop of unexpected animal action. It has provided ample fodder for laughable critiques and has even risen above a few of its predecessors in the universe, like Morbius, which is not saying much, but hey, there’s always a silver lining!

In terms of interesting tidbits, did you know that Kraven the Hunter first appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man comics in 1964? Also, Russell Crowe, despite reviewing a somewhat troubling film, has a history in superhero flicks, adding yet another layer to how he approaches a villainous role. This might not be the closure fans were hoping for, but it certainly keeps the door open for many debates at the local pub about our favourite comic heroes and their less than heroic adaptations!
